I found out that I could plug in an external eSata drive into my DVR to boost it's capacity. I have the COX Scientific Atlanta 8300HD box.

I bought one of the Western Digital 500GB MyDVR Expander hard drives (I'm not sure if any external eSata drive will work but this one does and is pretty cheap).

Go to your DVR List and look under preferences to see how much capacity your DVR is currently using. Mine was at 51%.
    • I plugged it into the eSata jack on the back of the box and the drive while the power to the DVR was on.
    • Then I plugged the drive's power adapter in (don't plug the power adapter into the back of the DVR).
    • I got a notice from the DVR that the hard drive was recognized and needed to be formatted (press A to accept). I let it sit all night because I'm not sure how long it takes to format the drive.
    • In the morning the capacity had not changed. So I unplugged the DVR box and then unplugged the drive's power.
    • I plugged the DVR back in and let it go through it's boot sequence (about 3-5 minutes).
    • Then I plugged the drive in. The DVR recognized the drive.
    • I checked the capacity of the hard drive that my DVR was using and it was now down to 11%.
    :headbang:

The stock HD DVR has a 160 GB drive so with the new drive my capacity is now 660 GB (little over 4x the recording space).

Hmmm... I bet it can be done, and now you've got me thinking about trying it. I have a DirecTV HD-DVR, and it's connected to my home network for PPV and On-demand stuff. I bet there's a way to hack it and access the hard drive in it.

The flaw with step 1, is that I still havent been able to recover my Helmet. :( I fear she threw it away.

My understanding of the way it works is a portion of the show is recorded to the primary storage drive in the DVR and the rest is stored on the MyDVR Expander. The instructions from the drive say it cannot just be unplugged and attached to a computer for access. Plus, since it's reformatting the drive to make it work, it's probably a proprietary method.
