Duct Tape falls apart in heat. Use a cap that fits the opening. Home Depot is your friend when it comes to that kind of stuff. :)

    RIP Lucy.
    She's gone but not forgotten.
On the 3.4 there's a big square silencer box hanging on the front of the air hose. It has a little (like 3/8 inch) hose coming off it.

I traced that back and I THINK it's going to the fuel pressure regulator. If you block that big box off you block that hose off too. I have no idea what it's for, I didn't notice any difference in the truck with it blocked. But just to be safe I cut that little hose and put a clear fuel filter made to go on lawnmower engines in it.

Anybody ever really figured out what that little hose is for?

sorry this is very interesting to me.

Is there any particular reason this mod cant be done to the V6? (or shouldnt be done) Besides there isnt much of an airbox?

Deck plate mod, intake silencer removed, AFE Pro Dry S Air Filter, debadged, Goodyear Duratracs 265/75R16. Flowmaster knock-off muffler!
i used a 3-liter bottle lid, drilled holes through 2 sides, stuck a piece of aluminum electric wire through & bent the 2 ends of the wire so it couldnt fall out!

I've never seen under the hood of a 2nd gen, but I'm guessing if you cut a hole in the front of the airbox you'd be letting air in behind the filter.

I dont think thats why it cant be done. The filter is closer to the engine.

Is it just because there isnt that big of an "air box"?

how would removing the silencer reduce hp? I have an after market CAI and it does not utilize the silencers. Does this mean that I am losing HP?

I BELIEVE the filter is in a box in the hose. The box at the wheel well is just for taking in air. I believe.

So is there a concensus that this mod will give you better MPG? Does it depend on your driving style? Or will it give increased MPG across the board?

Also, how reliable is the deckplate at keeping elements out when you DO NEED them out?

With the deckplate open, during a sudden rainstorm, or driving thru a highway construction zone with lots of dust, do you need to pull over and close the hole before proceeding?

So it should be able to be done on a 2nd gen V6 right?

I do not think so because the box that the filter is in is pretty small. Also, unlike the 1st gens, our box with the filter is father back so it would probably give little to no gain. If you want more air flow with the stock set up, go with an AFE Pro-dry air filter

I never had any issues with the Deck Plate mod on my First gen. When off road, with it open, the filter will get dirty more quickly. Thats about it. I ran it open for a couple years with no issues.

Just leave it there. Removing it does nothing for performance.
