So, yesterday I get into my 2016 Toyota Tacoma OR, as soon as I start the engine I hear a loud pop, glass sprays all over the cabin of the truck and my rear view mirror is handing from the data cable. I look closely and there is a gigantic chunk of glass stuck to the mount of the mirror (which is obviously missing from the windshield). There is also a crack running up and down a few inches on the window too. I checked the outside of the windshield and there is no impact marks or anything on the outside of the windshield. This is so strange to me, I have never seen anything like this...

I've seen that happen here in Az a few times. It's crazy and just be glad you didn't get a shard of glass in your eye.

Toyota canada says they have 0 reports anywhere in north america about this issue, so what they just don't document anything that means nothing is happening./

My window will chip or crack if I look at it too hard. This does not surprise me. Waiting for the summer heat to force me to replace it. I'm sure it won't be long.

According to Seatbelt Mike who is the Chief Engineer of the 2016 Tacoma, the windshield was was changed over from the 2nd gen to be more "acoustic" on the 3rd gen. That acoustic windshield seems to be weak sauce.

I just got off the phone with Toyota USA, they were useless...They told me a dealer will need to evaluate the window and decide if I did something to cause it...I find this interesting that it immediately come to "if I did something", not "there might be a defect"...the woman I spoke with said this just doesn't sound normal and she has NEVER hear of anything like this before...I will see tomorrow what BS story they try to come up with...

i just did the google and there's many other makes that suffer similar issues in warmer markets developing from pinholes (either post production or when items are attached from the factory) that eventually suffer over thermal expansion from hot to cold and back.

its not an excuse but its clearly a problem with manufactueres companies that test the composition during r&d --- per the google.

I'd be talking to corporate...a 3-4oz addition to the mirror would not cause this.

My windshield cracked from a rock tossed up by a semi on the highway.

Most likely the cause of the cement/glue and it fusing with the glass. Temperatures up and down and then the slight vibration of the motor sounds plausible?

I had a new Subaru do that to us years ago. Apparently the glass was chipped in transit, they put an epoxy filler in it (we didn't know about it). Ran it for years with no problems then one hot, humid day the entire windshield blew. Cracked spiderweb all the way across it. Sounded like a shotgun went off.

When the guy came out to replace it he showed me the one quarter sized spot that did not safety crack like the rest of the glass- he said it was an epoxy resin used in windshield repair. According to him the resin expands and contracts and sometimes it causes the windshield to crack, or in our case blow out.

    Interesting to say the least.
