Correlation doesn't mean causation. Seems to be a widespread issue amongst other other car brands too, based on a little googling.

...^^^... The OEM GoPro bracket does the same thing ... allows you to hang more weight on W/S ... attached like the rear view mirror too.

While I do agree completely with the fact that this SHOULD not cause a problem, I think i can also see what they are saying.

The windshield SHOULD be designed to handle X temps, and it SHOULD be high enough that something as stupid as reflectivity from a common car ornament doesn't effect it.

But let's say that it wasn't, I believe that it has nothing to do with the weight of the ball, but the fact that the sun gets "magnified" through the windshield and then can reflect off the ball into a concentrated heat source that could potentially be hitting the exact spot on the windshield for an extended period of time (i.e. if left parked in the sun for 8 hours while at work) that creates a weak point in the windshield, that eventually will cause crack.

Like I said, While it is likely to never happen, and the windshield SHOULD be designed to withstand it, I could see (from a theoretical standpoint) how it could be a culprit. Also, if I can can come up with this theory, so can the lawyers.

This sucks, but let's please not start saying this is on the Gen 3 Tacos. This could happen and has happened to many other makes and models. But again, sorry man, I do feel for you and wish this on nobody!

no matter what, dealers should be beggin for forgiveness and not giving any shit here....

    1) hanging stuff off the mirror is a local law enforcement problem, toyota can't say jack shit about it

it is technically illegal to have stuff hanging down from mirror, driving rules 101...toyota doesn't
have a pot to piss in for hanging stuff off mirror [unless you were hanging dumbells off it or something]

    2) no matter what, that windshield and mirror interface should never, ever break or crack like that, ever. ever. ever.
at most you should be able to rip the mirror off and leave a hardened smear of adhesive behind, glass intact.

the windshield is a critical structural support, integrated into the A pillars and roof, and it is
designed to be and act a certain way and work a specific way in crashes and rollovers

a mirror breaking off glass chunks is a huge, huge deal and big time defect in the safety
of the vehicle. let alone glass shards inside

Agree, Toyota needs fk pony up. I'd be up at dealer in GM's office. I wouldn't be calling my insurance personally.

The sun moves in the sky and is never stationsry for 8 hours or ever. The reflection from that ornament would never be in the same spot for 8 hours.

The issue with hanging things from the windshield is the weight issue.

I would have hung the dealer from the mirror and let's see how fast it breaks then.

I have taken the truck in for my 20,000 mile maintenance, the transmission software, the South American Whistle noise and the windshield (Pictures on slide 1). One of the service guys looked at the rearview mirror and said this should not have happened. I was told they do not have the windshield in stock, they will look at it today and I will need to bring the truck back a second time for any repair that will need to be done for the windshield. I will be picking up the truck tonight and should have some form of comment from the dealership about how they will be dealing with this glass issue. I just hope they don't decide to throw this back in my lap...I am sure I will have significant more to say if they do.

The unfortunate thing here, is that you are dealing with a joint involving no less than FOUR different materials.
    1) The glass,
    2) The black coating they put on the glass,
    3) The glue between the black coating and the...
    4) piece of metal.

While it would be nice if they could all expand and contract at the exact same rate at the same time, this is never going to happen. That black coating and that piece of metal will get HOT, creating a localized point of heat on the windshield, which will cause the glass to expand in that area, but not throughout the rest of the windshield. This leads to stresses in the surface, which if you're unlucky, will cause it to POP.

This "issue" is NOT unique to Tacoma, to Toyota, or to anything else.

Some cars have their rearview mirror attached in a different way so that this stress is not created. Some vehicles I've had, had the rearview mirror actually attached to the ceiling instead of the glass. I honestly don't understand why they aren't all done this way.

I have seen something similar happen on other vehicles. USUALLY, it happens when the car is parked and nobody is in it -- you will come back to it to find the mirror popped off, along with a nickel sized chunk of glass.

Mine did the same. Have a windshield on order through dealer. They said they are on backorder. I have a crack that goes all the way from the bottom of the windshield to the top. I currently have my rearview mirror taped to the windshield...

So, I just got off the phone with Ourisman Toyota in Chantilly, VA. The service personnel said they WILL NOT warrantee any glass products (irrespective of no sign of any tampering or road foreign object caused damage) and Toyota has NO obligation to do so. The guy also stated that it was cause by heat. I asked if the glass breaking is normal for heat exposure and he said yes. I then asked why should I buy their product if it is sold defective. He told be it is now my problem. So, if I want my windshield fix I will have to pay for it. It looks like TOYOTA is now building shit products and do not back up their or defective items.

But lets be honest man, that crystal is something I would see hanging on a chicks car much less alone a dudes truck.

Try a different dealer, try talking to Toyota directly. If all else fails, there are government bodies that you can report this kind of fraud to who will put pressure on them to fix it.

This is *definitely* covered by warranty.
