So I was in contact with my dealer about trading in my '14 2.7 SR5 for a '22 SR5 Trail Edition. I bought the '14 in 2016, used with like 10k on the clock. I had a long commute to my job and it now sits at 152k. The truck is in great shape and had no issues. No noises, or service engine light. Was just inspected and had frame inspected / treated. It has 3rd gen OR suspension, XD wheels w/ KO2s, Cali-Raised fogs, Custom seat covers etc. It's fully optioned SR5 in Pyrite Micha paint. They just quoted me $11000 on trade. I thought that was rather low, especially in this current market. Has anyone traded theirs in recently or gotten a quote that they can maybe give me a reference point? They have yet to get me numbers on the '22 but this was just to get the process going. I just feel like if they end up coming in super low on trade and then also the price of the new truck comes in high (which seems like it happens a bit right now) then I don't even want to waste my time. So just looking to hear some feedback. Thanks.

Here is a pic of the truck at my cabin a couple weekends ago, just to see.

This is anecdotal but in my experience you're going to be way better off in the private market. Trade ins work best when the street value isn't so inflated. That dealer would probably give you 11 and then list it for 26 or something. In order to achieve the tax benefit of the trade in, the truck needs to be within ~10% (depending on PA taxes which it looks like where you're from) of the cost you would achieve in the private market.

If you can bring all parts back yo stock, selling it to carvana fetches higher price than with those aftermarket parts.

    All stock, baby!
That's a terrible price. Tacomas are crazy popular and pricing in the used market reflects that. You'll get double that offer, I bet.

    I'm assuming 4x4?
If that was being sold around my parts (Hawaii), that would be going for over $20k I imagine, private sale. If you're able to work a private sale, that'll probably help more.
KBB's trade-in value for your truck isn't that good and around the value you already received.

I imagine the mileage and mods are dinging your value quite a bit -- dealers like stock vehicles to sell, not vehicles with a lot of story to explain.

For what it's worth, I recently had my 2013 appraised via Carnava. 2013 Access Cab, 49K miles, V6, 6-speed, 4x4, TRD sport. They offered me $25,250, which amazingly is only about $3K less than I paid for it (brand new).

Yes 4x4. I did a KBB and NADA trade estimate today and the average on KBB was like $15k and NADA was $16k. I also was doing searches for similar used ones online within a 200mi radius and I can't imagine a dealer re-selling my truck for under $20k, based on prices that I saw today. Again, if I'm out of line to expect more, then that's fine. I just would've been happy with close to $14k on trade.

+1 for private sale. Your truck looks like it’s in great shape. If you’ve got the time to show it. Couple year old used tacos are going for MRSP because the dealership doesn’t have any new ones to sell in my area.

my boss got offered more than she paid for her 3 year old 4Runner.

Private sale is the way to go by far. Just returned from the dealer and was quoted 17k for my '14 sr5 with a hir under 75k miles. Just like you, I have wheels/ tires, lift, head and tail lights done, yadda yadda yadda. The salesman (not the nicest might I add) said that they can't sell something with work done to it, "how are we going to get granddads to buy a lifted truck." Yeah, it was taillights for me after that comment.

It's tough, one hand my 2014 is a great truck and there is nothing wrong with it. But, like all of us here, the idea of something shiny and new is appealing lol.

Seems like a no-brainer to sell it yourself, so not sure why you'd even waste your time haggling with a dealer. I understand taking a little bit of a loss for convenience going the trade-in route, but seems here you're going to be leaving a lot more than just that on the table (not to mention the post trade-in pain of seeing your truck being listed by that same schmuck dealership for a hell of a lot more than what they gave you for it).

A little of this and a little of that.
I think your truck looks great and agree that 11K is low. I had a similar situation the other day - I drive past a Ford dealership last week and I see a 2020 Tacoma Limited DCSB truck on their used lot. I stop on a whim to check it out and of course a salesman comes right over. Nice guy actually, and we talk about the truck and the possibility of trading my 2011 DCSB 4WD 6 speed with 70K miles. Long story short, offered 14K for my truck and wouldn’t budge off 43K for a 2020 Limited DCSB 4WD with 9K miles.
The salesman was nice and informed me that the lift kit, aftermarket BBS wheels, and the fact that my truck has no maintenance history (because I do everything myself) hurt the value. No hurt feelings and I drove my 2011 home, gaining some knowledge and making a new friend.

Private sales is the way to go IMO. Trades muddy up the process in my experience. Good luck with the ‘22.

I just want to go on the record and say that I am just shocked by a dealer low balling on trade!

Yeah that would be a hard no for me. Dealer job is to put buyers in their boxes. Last Fall I was thinking of trading my 13 TRD OR DC and salesman games cost them. I didn't need to sell. I love my truck & having no payment. They still call my phone hoping I will change my mind......10 months later:rofl::luvya:

Trading is always a losing game for the buyer.

If it wasn't, dealers wouldn't do it.

I dont care how good one feels about a 'deal'.

Totally true and I realize. But there is some level of convenience that I'm willing to compromise taking a loss for. I think expecting $13-14k is more than reasonable. There is no reason that truck couldn't pull $20k on their end.

I may consider private sale but again, it is a bit of a hassle as far as if I don't find the truck I want, going w/o a vehicle in meantime etc.

They’re only offering $11k because you put a TRD Offroad sticker on a 4 banger :D

Your truck is better than the 2022. Drive it for another 150k and you will sell it for $11k privately after that.
