This cover has a locking panel on the forward/cab panel, and it apparently can be coded with the vehicle key which is cool. However, my 2018 TRD Pro has a Smart Key Fob. There is also a standard type key for use with the tailgate only, so I was hoping that it would work with the lock on the Extang cover, which would spare me from having to have a separate key just for the cover.

Has anyone tried this before? Thanks.

I have the same cover. Yes you can use the tailgate key to encode the lock on the cover.

I called Extang and they are telling me that the tailgate key cannot be used to encode the lock on my year/model. Not sure if it's different from a 2016 Sport or not...

The big tailgate key for 2016’s is a standard key that can be cut anywhere. whereas the keyfob tailgate key is funky. That one may not work.

This is what my tailgate key looks like. I also called Extang because I had concerns about it not coding. Guy walked me thru the process right there on the phone. But since I don't know what the key for 2018 Pro looks like, you may have to just get another key cut to use. Or install a pop n lock that will unlock with the keyfob just like the doors do. Sorry if I was not much help.

Yes that seperate tailgate key should be keyed the same as the one inside your fob which is a funky key to say the least. I would just go to a lock and safe place ask the guy to make you a random hillman #35 key(toyota) and that will work in your cover. The hillman 35 is the same as the 2016 tacoma key and older ignition keys. Get a couple copies...
