Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
After coming from an AC 2011 to a DC 2004, I would never go back to an extended/access cab again. I rarely haul people, but having that extra space is a must, especially being married and packing a woman around that has to have half her wardrobe along anytime we leave town. My '97 F250 has an extended cab and it was the pre rear suicide doors and getting to anything in the back is a pain. It's just a heavy hauler work truck so doesn't get used often, but, I'm toying with the idea of trading it off on a 4 door F350 in the future.

I went from a 13 AC to an 86 4Runner now to 04 DC. Really enjoy having the extra interior space even if I don't use it all the time. Picked up a hitch cargo carrier for when the shorter bed is too short. For me it came down to hauling people (including my dogs) or stuff. 2nd gens have the double cab long bed as an option. Haven't seen a 1st gen with that set up but they may be out there.

Shoot, wat0023...probably wouldn't even worry about a vehicle in grad school. You'll be too busy with school work to even use it. ;) :D

    Dear Everybody,

This is kind of a ridiculous thread. Comparing double cabs to extra-cabs is like comparing apples to oranges. They are completely two different trucks. I do agree, however, this thread becomes quite relevant when somebody has to decide which one to choose.

The double cab Tacoma is a much more versatile truck than its counterpart. It can easily handle extra people besides the ones in the front, and it still has enough bed space to handle dirty work when needed. It, however, is going to be more expensive to purchase than the both the extra-cab and regular cab versions of the Tacoma. The double cab is basically 1/2 SUV and 1/2 pickup truck.

The extra-cab Tacoma is going to be more useful than the double cab if you need a pickup truck around your house. It is going to have two more feet of bed space, which immediately becomes very useful once you have to dirty work with it.

Whatever you decide, good luck with your purchase.
    Paul

Sorry to revive an age old thread but what about in terms of offroad or expedition? Opinions on DC vs AC?

Also @wat0023 how are you enjoying the DC?

I think 6 lug AC's share the same suspension components as 6 lug DC's. I would think the AC would be a hair nimbler because of weight.

When I think of the stuff I've hauled with my DC bed then all these folks who say it's too short to do any serious hauling-yeah maybe.
These are just a few of many single hauls I can recall doing with my "little bed".
    1830lbs of landscaping stuff
    2 Lazyboy recliners
    1100lbs. of boxed beef
    900lbs boxed whole chickens
    a full-size matress/box spring/frame
    2 curio cabinets
    6'5" bookcase
as many boxes as I could pile up to the ceiling of the shell helping family members move stuff.
    Why go on?
In my opinion, this is some "serious" hauling by a pickup truck.
Yeah the regular bed might yield longer boards or surfboards whatever, but the bed on my DC has proven highly useful in my life.
So I say the DC is a MUCH wiser choice because I could do all that and have three passengers along as well.
