So I just bought a 2018 OR MT DCSB. It’s my first new vehicle. I knew what I want going into it, but when we started going through the details they sold me on the extended 10yr/100,000mi coverage. It’s about an extra $40/month, so I’m not that worried about paying it. There’s a 30 day window to back out of the extended coverage with only a $50 fee (if I’m reading it correctly).

My question is if anybody has had problems getting something fixed due to aftermarket parts. I’m going to get a lift/bigger tires, nothing too extreme. From what I understand, as long as nothing is directly affected by the modifications, it shouldn’t be a problem, but has anybody had any issues?

If you keep it you will never use it, if you opt out something will break. I normally buy it but that seems a little steep. Can normally be had for $1500ish.

First you should never finance extras like that. How much did it actually cost per your contract then tack on the interest you're paying on it. You can shop around for the Toyota ExtraCare Extended Warranty and can add it at any time before 3 years / 36000 miles. For instance I got my 7yr/125000 mile platinum for $1050. I would take a look at your contract and what you paid, if its pretty high see if you can cancel it (toyota will refund you the prorated amount) and shop around for it or see if you can pay it out of the loan amount so its not being financed.

As far as your warranty question its always gonna be a bit of a gamble with aftermarket stuff like a lift. When you lift the truck you are changing alot of things that can play an impact on alot of different variables, differentials, wheel bearings, CV axles, driveshaft, etc. It really depends on the relationship you have with your service advisor in my experience. I've seen guys get denied for differential seal failures under warranty with the dealer claiming the lift to be the cause, at that point its on you to argue and prove as to why it's not. I've also seen guys get all kinds of stuff fixed under warranty with a lift no questions asked. It's really gonna be if something does happen and the dealer denies it due to the lift do you have the resources and knowledge to argue against/appeal and are you willing to do so, but you could also never run into that issue. It's a risk/gamble you'll play lifting and if that's worth it to you to mod then go for it.

Also, if you modify your truck, your dealer, and many other dealers may try to weasel their way out of warranty work.

If I ever had anything major i would return to stock before even taking it in. I also pay for extended warranties. Never finance that stuff.

Thanks for the replies! I’ll double check the paperwork to see what I’m actually paying for it. They threw that in in the middle of filling out all the other paperwork. It sounded like a decent deal, mainly in case any of the electrical stuff inside the truck goes wrong. But it’s really the only part of the deal I’m having second thoughts on.

I will say I have never used it on the three Tacomas I have owned.

Yea yea yea. It doesn't change that it can become a stressful battle between you and a dealer. Some people, like myself, prefer to avoid the headache. That doesn't mean I'm against mods, it just means I typically just fix things that break instead of going to the dealer unless it is something big.

Agree with the 3rd gens at the right price its worth it if you plan on keeping the truck. On my 2nd gens didnt bother with it, simple truck to wrench on. Now having a new powertrain, moonroof, blindspot monitoring and all the other gizmos, $1050 seemed worth it.

Me either for my 2 2nd gens, but the 3rd gen and all the gizmos I decided to buy it.

No disagreement with you at all. It can and likely will be a stressful situation, depending on the circumstances.

Basic bottom line is the dealership has burden of proof that the modification you did is directly related to the issue.
It may take you some time and aggravation but at least there is a law that protects consumers.
Toyota gave me a platinum warranty for no charge because of some issues I had with the truck. I don’t think I would purchase one though. I think the odds are good you would never use it.

I got 100k coverage because my blower motor died as soon as I pulled my truck into my driveway the day I bought it lol

Well right off the bat it sounds like I paid too much. I wasn’t really thinking about any suspension/differential/drivetrain issues, because I know that would be a pain to argue that the lift didn’t affect it. But seeing as how everything seems to be run by a computer, it’d be nice to have the peace of mind on the extra coverage.

Agreed, I've seen issues with moonroofs, transfer cases, etc. Just see if you can cancel it and rebuy it at a cheaper rate.

As someone in the car business, who sells these, no the lift/mods won't void the coverage but they just won't cover any components related to your mods.

Also there shouldn't be any fee if cancelled within 30 day window.

In terms of value, one trip to a Toyota dealer for an electronic/computer malfunction will almost double what that coverage costs you-there is a reason the dealers have massive service departments, it's not just for show. New vehicles break more then 10 year olds ones. more shit to go wrong.

In my educated opinion being on the dealer/service end daily, you will get a return with one trip in 100k on average. Just my .02 cents though.

So you first buy the extended warranty and then you modify it and you basically want the modifications covered under the extended warranty that you purchased before making the modifications. Yeah, good luck with that.

I don't think he necessarily wanted the mods covered- just that they didn't void the coverage.

I don’t expect any of the mods to be covered, just wondering how much of a pain it is to have other stuff fixed.
