    Hi there,
Recently exploded my driver side CV after lifting my 01 taco 2.7L 3" inches with 882 springs and 5100 on lowest setting, they were old and couldn't take it. I do have the toyota reboot kit but was thinking of going with longer travel CV jobs. I see autozone makes them but also CVJ. What are other doing?

    Thanks!

That looks like a little too much lift o_O

I will only run OEM. It’s not a hard job to re boot. Only suggestion would be to use hose clamps and not the factory CV straps.

It’s messy. These are off my 1st Gen Tundra, Tacoma’s are coming soon.

    Get a quote from Toyota. It’s a $1,000 job.

Your issue is your lift, lower it

And it ain't long travel, it's extended

Won't matter though cause you're lifted too high

Shoot, I didn’t think those springs would push it up that high and then to think I could just deal with the fallout later. This thing only sees a gravel road every now and then too! I have a M8000 winch I haven’t installed. Would that push it down a bit ?

Defiantly sitting too high, not an axle length issue, its an angle and over extension issue. longer shafts are going to cause differential damage under full compression if you went that route.

They don’t sell a higher angle CV joint? I do need to get this on the road ASAP. I’m wondering how long a Napa or AutoZone unit will last until I can put lighter springs on it. I only drive this thing on the street.

The Suretrac 'extended' (think they make them for the auto parts chains) ones were working good at 4 inches of lift. The boots are more like a plastic and don't deteriorate like the rubber ones and the cv's will put up with more angle than stock. I paid like $130 each, still made in China, but better than other aftermarket rubber booted stock replacement ones. Dropping it down some then using Toyota boots on OEM axles is ideal.

If you've looked at any thread regarding these extended cv axles you'll see where myself and many others will tell you - the boots are no better

I ripped them multiple times at just under 2" of lift

You have an IFS truck, you need to lower your lift

Drop it to about 2" or less, and get a reboot kit for your cv axles

Mine sits about 2.5-3" above stock and it took me awhile to figure this out haha. After running through a few stock style CVs I put in a diff drop and now have the extended Oreilly CVs. This is all pretty recent so idk if this is for sure the answer but it's something.

Diff drop? Tho I’ve read people hating on those too. Can someone explain the cons of a diff drop. Because I haven’t heard of any. I tore my boots when I originally got my truck 100k ago. Shop installed a diff drop. Haven’t torn the boots ever since and I have between 2”-3” of lift on 882 OME springs.

I don't know why they would be hated on. To me they make sense geometrically in that it lowers the diff to better line up with the hubs and make a less aggressive angle for the CV axle. But there could be negatives I am unaware of

Looks like there’s a few threads on diff drops already with many people on each side. The way I see it.. it’s a cheap mod that’s doesn’t hurt anything important. Get it and see if it helps.

    A few "cons"
only the front of the diff is lowered. The actually difference at the cv axle is only part of the drop. So lets say it's a 1" drop kit, you might only "see" .5" at the axle.
whatever you drop (1") you loose in ground clearance.
won't work with a lot of after market skid plates (see above)

I both ran one for years, and then removed it, and I did not notice any improvement in fin rub. My original OEM boots lasted the longest. All the replacements since then have had much shorter lives. diff drop is not worth it IMO.

Reboot with OEM boots, do the bootslide mod, do not do a diff drop. Easy.

    This.

The whole "I have to be lifted 3 inches!!!111oneone" is crazy

It's an IFS rig, lower it.

OP is using 882 springs, they're meant extra weight like a steel bumper with a winch, roof rack, etc. It probably rides really harsh. If he wanted just a lift then he should have went 881. But the reason he has 3" of lift is because of those 882 springs.

I did install a diff drop at the time of the lift. I did install a trail gear bumper, which added some weight and I meant to add the winch as well but I think with my smaller 2.7 L engine it may still be too high

Pretty ugly I know. Do I need new axle seals as well?
