I don't typically get extended warranties but considering it. They are by Toyota and not by third party so that's a plus. What do others here think? The info from the dealer is just one page with a bunch of hand written notes which doesn't impress me. I'm guessing if I do it I get a more complete paperwork - at least I would hope.

Brand new tech/first year model run, yeah, that is one of those times I'd do it. Last year or two of a run with all the bugs worked out, probably not worth wasting a dime on it.

There was a time when you bought a Toyota mainly because you knew it didn't need an extended warranty.

Ok. I guess you are implying that you need to buy extended now but it isn't at all clear. Just that you long for yesterday...

I bought the platinum extended warranty for peace of mind knowing it's a new model run and I didn't want to regret not doing it in the event I have problems.

I am glad that I got it, BUT I am coming to learn that having the warranty essentially is going to keep me from making any mods on the vehicle while under warranty. From what I am coming to learn, Toyota dealerships will blame ANY modifications on the vehicle in an effort to void the warranty. I even read something that changing the tires/wheels could conceivably void the warranty. This is a HUGE disappointment because that is one of the things I was most looking forward to with the new truck.

I probably would, although I'm not much of a warranty guy.

    BUT

I'd never buy it via the local dealer, as the Finance guy is trying to make his kids next tuition payment.

A search here will find a Toyota source that sells legit Toyota warranties at a much reduced price.

Also, you don't have to buy it out the door. You can wait until you're close to exceeding the normal warranty. The good move there is if you decide to sell, trade or it's totaled before the warranty expires, you don't have to wrangle over the extended one.

This person sells them, mention TW. He works from a single dealer in a midwest state but can sell to people in all 50 states ...

Only ever bought one extended warranty. Never again. I got my money out of it only after I raised a stink about a ticking in bottom end. If you read all the fine print, it didn't cover wear items. Well the whole dang vehicle is a wear item.

Bought wife a new car years ago. Finance guy was pushing ext warranty hard. I asked if factory warranty would cover defect mechanical repairs. Why, yes he replied. Then why would I buy another warranty that runs concurrently with factory warranty? There were some extra coverages (100k mile, loaner car, etc.), but not worth the money they get for it. For me anyway.

The irony of saying "I'm worried I bought an unreliable product from Toyota so I want to pay Toyota more money in case its as bad as I think."

Doesn't take much in repairs these days to pay for an extended warranty. Just ask the F150 owners that paid to have the cam phasers fixed or more recently their transmission repaired. IMO there's too many issues from the manufacturers to wing it on a new vehicle and toyota's recent stumbles shows they aren't immune. Probably a 50/50 chance of exiting the ownership unscathed but the scathing tends to be pricy.

Ths guy at the midwest dealership sells 10-year 125k mile warranties for $1800. I understand the wish for not needing it, but given that cost or 4 year 65k warranty for $550 ... the argument can be made to buy the extra warranty.

It's a Toyota... just saying. Chances are in your favor that you'll never need it. In the 17 years since buying my 07 other than general maintenence all that's broke so far was a burned out tail light bulb.
