Just got my first Tacoma a couple weeks ago. Think I got a bumper to bumper 36k warranty. The dealership offered me 120k for $2,000... I know these trucks are well built but do you think this is worth it getting?

^This. Shop around for a better deal. The extended warranty is underwritten by Toyota, so you can buy it from any dealer across the country.

Troy use to be the goto guy for Toyota discounted Service Contracts, He still sells the Fidelity VSC. That is the only VSC Southeast Toyota Dealers sell. You have to go to Shreveport Lexus or Midwest Toyota to get a discounted VSC I paid $1050 for a Toyota Platinum VSC 8/100K. If I sell the truck before the original warranty period I will get most of that back. If I sell the truck in five years the buyer gets a 3 year 100K bumper to bumper Genuine toyota VSC. Thats better than certified.

Well I paid the big price ... GAP, 120,000 mile bumper to bumper, 90,000 mile maintenance, and 90,000 mile tire coverage. I paid like $5,000 for everything with NO DEDUCTIBLE.

At the time before joining this forum last September, I didn't know there were other packages or options. They originally offered 4.5% financing, and sold me the insurance and gave me 2.1% financing. I didn't know any better so I rolled with it.

Here's "my" deal: once or twice a year I travel from Dallas to Northern Canada/Alaska ... approx 5000 miles round trip ... sometimes barren areas ... sometimes off road heavy bush by Fort Mac in Alberta and sometimes like driving through the state of Wyoming between 10pm and 5am ... where you have seen only 2 cars, 4 mountain goats and 7 deer in the last 400 miles. You also need to take extra GAS as there are NO GAS stations sometimes for hundreds of miles.

    I wanted the security of:

If ANY PROBLEMS ... NO MATTER WHAT
I CALL 1 - 800 - TOYOTA - COME AND FIX THIS! Out of gas, need a boost, tires, computer problems, drivetrain, electrical etc.

That is why I paid .... sometimes there are NO dealerships for hundreds of miles ... with this warranty not my problem: It is 1 - 800 - TOYOTA to the rescue.

You don't need to buy the Extended Warranty right away. Just have it before the original one expires.

Some good info here to get me ready before I make my next purchase. Just making sure, GAP insurance is separate from any extended warranty correct? It's what pays out the cost of my truck in the event it is totaled?

Yes it is separate, and Yes it pays the difference of what you owe and what the insurance company will pay you in case you have a total loss.

I hate working on cars with them because they dont like to pay anything to fix them. But at a consumers point of view if you can get a good price on it and plan on keeping the truck its well worth it. It will pay for itself in 1 repair. Parts are expensive and labor sometime can be too. Ive seen many jobs cost more than what the extended warranty costs but its a gamble that you will have a problem. Many people have it and never use it.

OP, another reason I bought all that insurance is because this is the first year of the 3rd generation. I asked how many computers on this new Tacoma. They said there are 7. I said, what would it cost if one quit working or a couple of them. They said thousands and thousands of dollars.

I bought the warranty mainly for after the 36,000 mile basic warranty. The power train is covered but not the electrical etc. This model has a new engine and transmission and new interior etc. I just wanted to be safe as I will be keeping my Taco for many years.

That sounds like a really expensive roadside assistance plan. I considered an f150 when I bought my Tacoma. If I bought the Ford I would have paid for an extended warranty. Buying a Tacoma I didn't even give it a second thought. I bet less than 10% of tacoma extended warranties are used enough to justify the expense.

Just an insight, Gap insurance through the dealer/manufacturer is typically more expensive than just adding it on to your auto policy.

I don't remember what I paid for my 7 year/100k mi extended warranty back in 2010 for my first Tacoma, I think it was around $800 or so, but I'm quite happy I bought it.

Around the 45,000mi mark my headlights suffered from the DTRL-melting-lense problem. Two brand new headlights would have set me back a bit over $700 from the dealer. Instead, the extended warranty covered it with ZERO deductible. At 50,000 my A/C system went kaput and was completely covered by warranty.

So in my experience, taking the time to find the best deal on an extended warranty and buying it is well worth it. The initial cost may set you back X amount of dollars, but considering most of us on this site don't blink an eye at spending the same amount or more on mods and crap for the truck we don't really need, an extended warranty to insulate ourselves from random truck misfortune seems to be a no-brainer IMHO.

Again, these are my thoughts based upon experience. YMMV
