It is illegal in all 50 states for a dealership to require you to have them perform any services in order to keep your warranty valid. You can have any shop you want do all repairs and/or maintenance, or you can do it yourself. As long as you’ve done all the maintenance per the manual’s recommended intervals and have records and receipts, they cannot deny your warranty claim for that.

Any recommendations for repairs by a dealer are only recommendations, not requirements. Their recommendations do not get sent to Toyota corporate or anything like that. I bought my 10 yr./100K Toyota VSA extended warranty from Wolverine Toyota (don’t remember the state they are located in, but not my own) for $1360. I got the paperwork in the mail a few weeks later. I just had my thermostat replaced under warranty last month at my local dealership in California, no issues at all. They knew I had a factory ext. warranty on their computer and I didn’t even have to mention it.

For what it's worth. I am about even on cost of the extended warranties against the cost of the repairs. Sometimes they save me money, other times all I get is the peace of mind that when or if the transmission torque flow gear riser clutch imulagator fails, it'll get fixed for my $100 deductible. The one time that we came out really ahead was when we bought a MoPar extended warranty on a 1983 full size Wagoneer limited. I forget the cost of the warranty, but it was somewhere around $600. The Jeep had 33,000 miles on it when we bought it, in 1989.

A week later, it developed a front-of-block oil leak. It turned out that it needed a replacement oil pump housing and oil pump. If you know those V8 engines, you know that just getting to the part is like open heart surgery. Retail on the parts by themselves approached the cost of the warranty. Full retail on the repair was close to $1K. We paid the $100 deductible.

My experience is as follows:My local dealer had me set up to buy an extended warranty at 2954.00. After my call to Jerry Johnson I came away with a 10 year/100,000 mile platinum warranty (0 deductible) for 1260.00.

Working on a lien delete for my title…..

I’m pretty sure they’re concurrent. At least mine is. Ten years, expires in 2029, truck is a 2019.
