Extent of trimming

    Just curious what size tire requires trimming of the cross member (aka the metal). Could I get away with 285/75/16 tires with just trimming the plastic within the wheel well? This is going to be with a 2.5 to 3" lift eventually.

    If you aren't lifted you are going to have to trim like crazy to fit those tires....If they fit at all (which I'm not sure they will...)
    You are better off saving the coin to get the list and then doing the rims and tires once your lift is set.

    I'm not getting the tires until the lift is in, sorry if it was confusing. Just trying to figure out the biggest tires I can fit with that lift without having to cut metal.

    I have 285/70R17s and I'm going to get the cab mount chop done.
    285/75R16 is approx same size.

    How bad is it rubbing? Do you think 275s would clear with minimal trimming?

    It makes a pretty vicious farting sound every time i go full lock right turns. It's worn a bit of the coating off the frame and roughs up the outside edge of the tire a little but.

    Take a look at tire sizes- The 285 or 275 isn't the diameter of the tire....It's the width of the tire. The second number is the aspect ratio of sidewall to tread width.

    A 285/75R16 is a 285mm wide tire, the side wall is 75% of that and the rim is 16 inches. So you can keep the 285 and go to a 70R16 or 65R16 and that will shrink the overall diameter and minimize/prevent rubbing.

    I knew the first number is the width but I guess I didn't understand what part of the tire was causing the rubbing. If the tire is rubbing at full lock you're saying that it needs to be shorter not thinner to alleviate it?

    If you shrink the width of the rim...you also shrink the diameter.
    Or you can keep the width the same...and just shrink the diameter.

    I gotcha. it didn't make sense til I got that the second number is the percentage of the width rather than a measurement. Makes sense. I'll try for 285/70 or 285/65 as i care more about width then diameter. Thanks Brunes.
