They suggest "Pre cooling" Burning a bag of ice in it the day before use. It does help but not really practical.

I precool mine by just dumping the ice tray out of my freezer in it the night before or in this case I threw an ice pack in there with several bottles of frozen water. No need to really go out and buy more ice just to waste this works just as good.

picked up the 4 lb Yeti ice insert - we'll see if there's any benefit. Fills the whole bottom of my Roadie so I assume it has to do some good.

Here's my not very in depth review, but it's the first time I've put this thing to use. Took it to the range today, filled with 10lbs of ice and six 16 oz water bottles. Kept it in the bed of the truck the whole day, it kept the waters ice cold and it did not get any condensation on the bag itself. I just checked the bag again a minute ago (in the back of the truck but in the garage since about 3:30pm) and there is about 50/50 ice and water. So, not a huge ice retention system but I am vey happy with how well it kept the drinks cold all day and into the evening. And this thing's zipper is definitely waterproof, flipped it upside down and shook it around with no issues. I can't wait to use it a bit more because it is super stiff right now and its hard to get you hand in and out of the cooler without it scratching the hell out of your hands. Let me know if you guys have any questions about anything I may have left out, like I said I didn't do anything too special with it, just used it as I intend too, for day trips. Attached a couple pictures, the last one is me holding it upside down over the bed, hard to do that with one hand and take a picture with my phone in the other but you get the point, no water dripping.IMG_3948.jpgIMG_3949.jpgIMG_3950.jpgIMG_3951.jpg

I think the soft Yeti and the Roadie serve similar purposes - day trips. You're really paying for ruggedness and unique designs in the small size coolers - not really ice retention. I couldn't imagine my Yeti roadie ever breaking or wearing out. I don't think I could break it if I tried.

Yeah, for a single day my small $19 Coleman will keep everything ice cold all day even in the hot sun. But it won't look as cool!
And as far as buying ice, I live where I have to buy drinking water, so I buy the 1 gallon jugs, drink the water then fill with my nasty tap water and freeze them. Use the claw of hammer to bash the ice to pieces if you want to make things really cold or just leave in the jugs to use like blocks.

For a short trip I use my white ultra igloo. I think mines 48 qt. just got back from hot ass deer hunting and I had most of my ice when I got home. My latch however, was halfway broken thru:).

It insulated awesome. Just not a tough box. And it's light. Really light

By the way - a Yeti may be bearproof but it's not puppyproof. Here's the damage a 6 month old puppy can do in about 10 minutes of unsupervised chewing. Another 10 and I think she would have rendered the lock shackle useless. I couldn't be mad with her - it's exactly the same texture as the hard polymer chew toys we give her. It's held up for years after this abuse with no structural failure, but I don't lock it up ever.

Hahhaa. I couldn't be mad either. I would just shake my head and laugh honestly.

Maybe try some plastic weld and sort of smooth it out.

Ok, so after destroying 2 hinges and a latch on my Igloo Maxcold on my last trip out I'm in the market for a rugged cooler. I want to keep the price below $300. I have narrowed my search down to the Engel Deep Blue 65, Pelican 65 and the Igloo Yukon 70. All priced within $20 of each other.

Anyone have any Pro's or Con's based on experience on any of these before I pull the trigger?

Thanks, I called them to bitch about how easily they broke on their $60 cooler so they gave me 50% the replacement parts I needed. But...that cooler will now stay on the back patio for parties and not moving/bouncing around in my trailer/bed of truck.
