I have calculated my mpg's twice now and I just don't understand, im getting 16 mpg's its a 2000 Tacoma pre runner 2.7L , no lift, no oversized tires or nothing, new plugs new fuel filter, k&n air filter, its just a basic prerunner, I took the truck to my uncle who is a mechanic, he put the scanner on it and checked it, he said everything was not good it was perfect, anyone have this problem or a solution to this problem?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
How old are the shocks? If you've got over 100k I'd replace the 02 sensor. Maybe replace the rear diff lube to synthetic.

"he said everything was not good it was perfect,"

assuming there was nothing wrong, right?

driving habits have a lot to do with the miles per gallon, to get really good MPG you kinda got to drive like a grandma on a leisurely Sunday drive...egg between foot and gas peddle, no jack rabbit starts, and keeping it @70MPH or lower on the freeway...

How did you calculate your mpgs?

Are your tires exact OEM diameter?

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
Are you sure you're calculating the mileage correctly? How many miles and how many gallons last fill up? I see kenlyns beat me to it.

Something is wrong somewhere. Either its the way you drive, or get another mechanic. Just looking at a scanner won't tell you everything.

Did this start happening all at once, or has the mileage always been crappy?
Do you maintain your truck, or ignore it for years?
Is the check-engine light on when running?

You don't give us much to go on.

Try lubing the drive-shaft, check if the brakes are dragging, check if the cat is plugged up.

yes I maintain everything to the best of my abilities. and what are you saying about the cat being plugged up?, and i have only had the truck about a year, but i never checked mileage befor i jst have checked it. brakes are not dragging about to order and change brake sheoes, this truck has been treated like a complete baby since i have bought it. its got 99,xxx miles, heres how it went. i filled tank, reset trip and heres the results of next fill up,197.3 miles driven devided by12.36 gallons used which comes to 15.96 (16) any ideas

K&N air filters are good at getting oil on the MAF. I'd start with cleaning it with some good contact electrical cleaner........then get an OEM filter.

With larger 235's can up your mileage calculations by 2.2% so you actually got 16.3 mpg. I'd withhold judgment until after a few more fill ups as there are way too many variables:

    tire pressure
    ambient temperature
    summer/winter blend
    ethanol content
    pump click off sensitivity
...even which way your truck is tilted when you fill up

Post again after a few more drive/fill cycles as you'll have a more accurate mileage profile. :)

Swap the stock filter back in, and run a tank of gas thru. See if the mpg changes.

I have a similar vehicle (but with 4wd) with stock 3rz motor and filter, and get over 21mpg overall. And thats with crappy California gas. Theoretically, you should be doing a little better.

What tire pressure are you running? Should be minimum of 30 psi for pavement.

Well I really hate to use another filter after buying the k&n, but maybe I'll try that although the filter was in it when I was getting decent mileage

Ok so just an update. Went and bought a frame ultra guard and immediately put it in, filled up the tank and reset trip meter will update when new gas mileage is attained

Even when I have a lead foot I can't get less than 20.0. I don't believe you're alone tho, I've seen this story a few times on here. At least the truck is paid off right?

I had a 99 Tacoma prerunner 3rz and always got about 18.5-19.5. It's the gearing combined with the auto trans that kills the mpg. That's why I went back to the 5 lug was to get my mpgs back.
