    a well made vehicle has no problems hitting high mileage with no major repairs. BMW Mercedes and VW use to do it all th time. they all kinda suck now which is why i got a toyota, but my last car was a 1990 bmw. it hit a quarter of a million miles with no major repairs. i had to replace the clutch (common maintenance at that age) and it was the original bmw clutch, and that was around 230k miles. it was still running strong till it got wrecked. a good car/truck shouldn't have any major problems under 150k miles. unofortunately good cars and trucks are getting harder and harder to find these days

    I went with the Taco after looking at other similar sized trucks. I liked the Ridgeline's heated mirrors, and a few other options. I liked the interior of the Titans I looked at (didn't get to see a Frontier). But it came down to my Corolla being 8 years old, 150k miles, and nothing more than tires, oil and gas. Clutch went around 150k, and tranny went after that... But I have a feeling the tranny going has something to do with guys that replaced the clutch. :rolleyes: Since it failed less than 1,000 miles later. So lets assume 150k miles on a car that lived it's first 48k as a rental and all it needed was a new clutch.

    Sure, it burns oil now that fouls the cats, but apparently ALL Corollas that age/mileage burn oil so I deal with it now. Afterall, it IS 10 years old. Most of the Toyota's I've seen in my family have easily pushed 10yrs so toyota was a natural choice for a truck.

    I don't intentionally do things to damage it (drop heavy, sharp rocks in the bed; bump up against trees), but I don't baby it either. :D However, I have reinforced the tailgate and skid plates.

    My history with Toyota trucks started in 1987 & all have not given me any age problems other than regular maintenance & rust. Toyota addressed any long term problems with a lifetime/no mileage limit head gasket recall which was on prior GEN1 trucks. For GEN1s they have stepped up to the plate with the rust buy back. On GEN 2 (05+), there are TSBs which address issues. The reason I'm saying all this is that I feel Toyota does ok with handling major issues. As for my experience, I have driven close to 500k on 4 toyota trucks (87, 90, 95, 06). None with any transmission or engine problems.

    i honestly beated the shit out of my 98. thing was swiped with a semi truck, ive gotten it stucked numerous of times, pounded the shit out of it over curbs and rocks and drove it with out re gearing it when i got the 33s and the thing hung like a champ.

    my 2.7 wouldnt go passed 55 mph on any slant up hill on the freeway, it struggled with the 33s w/o re gearing

    To my knowledge you don't need to regear a gen2 (V6 at least) unless run 35's or larger. I never had a problem running 33's on mine. I have 32's now since they were much cheaper, and they got rid of the slight rub from the 33's (285's).

    My opinion is this. The work I have done on Tacomas hes mostly been out of curiosity. I have taken them down to the block and pistons. It has never been a really dificult thing. Every time I have had to work on a Ford, it has been a nightmare. I have never said "WTF were they thinking" more in my life, than when working on a Ford. I have never had a major breakage that wasnt my fault on a Tacoma.I have some friends with 200,00, 300,00 and one with 585,000 miles on his Tacoma. All he has replaced is: Starter, batteries, filters, oils, and a valve job. He may be an extreme case, but Everyone I know with a Ford that has over 75,000 miles on it, has problems of some degree. And then I have to help them fix their POS trucks. FWIW, If I ever meet a Ford truck engineer, Im going to punch them in the ear!

    I went through the same thoughts helping a buddy swap the front axle of a 4x4 79 Ranger. :laugh: What a fucking pain in the ass that was! :mad: We broke more wrenches on that damn thing! It was mud covered and rusted, but still.... Some of the retarded assembly procedures made it harder than it really needed to be.

    I have had my taco since new and love it. I was always a domestic truck owner( chevy, ford, chevy, chevy , Jeep, and dodge) and out of all of the former I have been more pleased with over all versatility and reliability of my Taco than all the others. They are great trucks very sound and really quiet rides.

    I'm looking into getting a new one. But I don't mind getting a used 2006 and up to get the price down.
    There is a member on here I saw with with an access cab that I'm looking at.
    His name is derekabraham - I saw his truck yesterday in a New Member post. He is a senior member and he has my truck. I wonder if he's selling? Can someone ask him? I can't get this PM thing.

    My 2001 is to this day officially problem-free. Actually, I won't part with it as it has become such a faithful part of the family. It has great power, sounds good, looks great-hell the AC is so cold Rosie tells me to turn it lower on a 90* day:) if you buy used, go with a 1st-genner (95-04) especially the 01-04s which are the pinnacle of reliability.

    Keep your eyes open to new as well. My wife wanted used thinking it would be cheaper, and I wanted new so I knew I wouldn't have to fix anything anytime soon. And my opinion is that you're always buying someone else's problems when you buy used.... Anyway, she only saw a $2k price difference between used and new. So only save $2k, someone else broke it in, who knows what could be wrong with it.... :laugh: So we went new.

    Oh, and did anyone see the Top Gear episode on Monday? They had a F150 Lightning on there and explain why it was rubbish despite the vehicle with the most sales ever. :laugh: (hmmmm..... maybe that counts people buying replacements? :D )

    You won't save that much by going used. I got my 2009 at dealer invoice, and with the safety improvements added for the 2009 model year, it was a no-brainer vs. paying a couple thousand less for a used one.

    Hey the F-150 isn't bad. I think it beat the new Tundra. It's built tougher.
    The only thing I don't like about it currently is gas guzzling - which is the main reason I have to give it up.
    I also don't like that I'm out of the warranty at 115,000 miles and I have to fix it. Gonna cost $690. So I want to use the $690 as downpayment on another vehicle. I'm not taking chances with other probs if I were to get my F-150 fixed.
    So the access cab is roughly a 2k difference used? hmmm. think I'll go new then.
    Alright (i'm a bit hesitant) but let me call Toyota today.

    So the truck good at holding value?

    Tacoma gets four new exterior colors and updated audio systems, but the most notable change is the suite of safety features made standard. All Tacoma models now include the STAR safety system, which includes an Anti-Lock Brake system, Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control. Also joining the list of standard equipment are active headrests, rear side-curtain and front seat-mounted side airbags. A new limited-slip differential will help keep things moving in low-traction situations.

    Wow better safety features than the Ranger. But not better fuel economy. Pic is a nice color BTW

    I wasn't saying they were bad... Top Gear posed the the question of why they don't buy American trucks (in England) when they buy everything else American. So they brought the F150 on and loved driving it. But then showed how none of the dash panels fit together, gaps between parts, and how it was just too big for what most people in Britain need or can fit on their roads. Or "rubbish" according to Jeremy. :laugh:

    I tried getting my truck refinanced a few months after buying it (for lower rate). Bought it for $27k out the door, and it clocked in at $26+k when the bank checked the value to apply for the re-fi.

    Oh, and I still owed about $26k on it, so it was worth what I owed. :D
