I have a 2013 TRD Sport Magnetic Grey and I managed to bump a corner of the roof taking a box off the roof-rack. It took three chips of paint off, each a little smaller than a penny, probably about half the size of a penny.

I swung by my local Toyota dealer and picked up some Toyota Touch Up Paint, in 1G3 (code taken from the door jam).

    It doesn't match ...

It's a shade or two too light and completely lacks the depth of the original paint. Anyone else hit this issue - any suggestions on how to "fix" it?

The problem with touching up any metallic paint when using a touch up bottle is getting it to match. If you don't shake the paint really, really well, you have absolutely no hope of a match. On top of that, you're using single stage lacquer to touch up basecoat / clearcoat original equipment paint. And the bigger the area you're trying to touch up, the worse the problem gets. Touch up bottles are really made just for very small chips.

I'd propose that for the size of the areas you're trying to touch up, nothing but a professional shop is going to get even close. Sorry.

When I inquired about having some bodywork done at the local body shop, the owner showed me the PPG book on paint. There’s something like 11 different shades of Magnetic Gray Metallic. It’s noticeable when you compare the shades to each other.

The only shade he has to worry about is the one shown on the paint code on the door jamb tag.

In the PPG book, they’re all listed as 1G3 paint code.

    Reality check here....
If its anything other than white, it will NEVER match....
    Especially metallic silvers, grey, etc....

I use Dr Colorchip on a couple of my vehicles and like the product. (My friends say Dr Colorchip is easier to use than the similar product "Langka" Color Blob.)

But, results really depend on the size, depth, age, and characteristics of the damage, as well as the surrounding paint condition. It helps hide alot, but it doesn't perform miracles.

Thanks folks. Yeah, the door jam says 1G3 but as you say, it seems to cover a pretty broad spectrum.

I had head that the Dupli-Color Perfect Match was good so picked up a can, but also found it to be too light.

I really don't need it perfect, just need it not to be an eye sore. Some people point to the color match improving with coats, but, yeah, the clear-coat seems to be an important step.

I used the Toyota 1G3 pen to fill in a medium sized gash on the roof from the PO that was starting to rust and it came out absolutely terrible. The color pen did do an ok job on small rock chips but I found that the Toyota clear coat in the pen actually made the repair spots more noticeable and turned them into a silver shade. Definitely wouldn’t recommend the pen for filling in anything larger than small chips.

Well I have a much older bottle of Toyota touch up paint. Same color as you. It seems to match fairly close. I always use a separate paint brush, depending on the size of repair.

You can fill the area with enough coats that it's slightly raised, then carefully come in and wetsand it down to level it. Then follow with some compound on a buffer and it should blend better and be less obvious

My wife scraped the maroon metallic paint on hr hyundai. I bought a kit from Paint Scratch. You can’t tell it’s been touched up until you get close enough to see my lousy brush work.

You aren’t fixing a chip that’s half the size of a penny with any touch up paint. There are ways to do it diy but it will be time consuming. Post up some pics of the chips.

Paint touch ups should be judged by the "10 foot rule". Meaning, if you can't tell it's there from 10 feet away then you did well.

a tip that is key to success, taught to me by my bodyshop techs at work...
Dap the paint into the damage using multiple thin applications.
Even if the application is on the heavier side, it will shrink down once it dries & you will need more..
Dont ever brush it on when applying, regardless how big the scratch or damage is, thats what makes it look like shit most of the time.

Automotive Touchup has the best color match of all the paint colors from what I have seen.

However, silver is a PITA an any metalflake makes it even worse.

I had a front bumper cover recently repaired [idiot backed into me] and repainted and they did a FANTASTIC job color matching 9 year old silver flake. I was so amazed that I actually asked to speak to the painter, shook his hand, and congratulated him on a great paint match and spray. [laid it on so the paint flop matched the rest of the car paint.]

That is a sign of a great painter.

However, you will never get a metallic touch up paint flop close, it's just the way it is. [using a brush] Most touch up paints are way to thick in the first place and they get worse every time you open them up.
