You remind me of the way my dad buys c. He gets bored very easily with vehicles.
Just using us to help validate your boredom?

I priced out Sport with the tech package. Should be apples to apples. Their asking price on the 2017 Tacoma seems decent.

An extra $10K financed means a payment difference of about $175 per month for you on the same term. I understand that extra payment is not insignificant. I’d stretch the payments out two more years and buy the new Tacoma for the same monthly payment. You won’t have equity for a while, but you will have a new truck with a full warranty and upgrades like the power seat (dealbreaker for me on the 2017), better safety suite, Apple CarPlay/android auto, you can get LED headlights, etc.

Yeah I’m truly unable to decide. I wouldn’t mind new but I also don’t want to spend that much. I definitely can appreciate the pros of going new. But I can’t justify spending that much a month yet. Plus it would force me to keep it until I had some equity

I sold my Tacoma and I bought GX460.

Honestly, I don't think I can go back to that 3.5 V6 in the Tacoma. It's a terrible engine for the Tacoma platform.

If you have a 2.7 ecoboost, a Tacoma is going to feel like a big downgrade.

It sounds like you’re a payment buyer, there is nothing wrong with that. If the payment ends up the same on new or used what is the difference in having a couple more years of it? You don’t keep them until paid off anyway. Your equity position would be similar on either the 2017 or a new truck, you might be a couple thousand dollars more negative on the new truck initially. Two more years of indentured servitude and the monthly payments are basically the same. Buy new and force yourself to stay in it a while. If you’re not ready for that commitment then just keep the F-150 because you’re not 100% sold on the Tacoma.

I bought new trucks in 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2005. When I finally nutted up and bought the 2006 Dodge 2500 diesel I really wanted I paid it off and happily kept it for 12 years until my needs changed. I put the payment in an account monthly and when I decided on a 2020 Ford Raptor I was able to pay cash. My needs changed drastically a month after getting the Raptor so sold it and I ended up leasing a Tacoma. I was young and foolish when I was getting new trucks every two years in my 20’s, I could’ve saved lots of money if I just bought the right truck to start and kept it long term. I spent my 30’s paying off my previous stupidity (not just trucks). Get whatever you really want and break the payment cycle by keeping it long term.

One thing i noticed with owning a new tacoma...my insurance premiums went down considerably from having a full size truck. After nearly a year i find nothing wrong with the 3.5 engine. I probably miss my 4' wide bed more the tundra had than anything.

I wouldn't say the 3.5 is a "terrible" engine. The transmission logic, that's a different story. That being said, I have often thought Toyota should put the 4.6 in a up-market version of the Tacoma and not sure why they don't, given they have already used in the Tundra. My guess is that they have no trouble selling all the Tacoma trucks they build and the cost of engineering and certifying the 4.6 in the platform doesn't pencil.

I just like switching them up. For some reason I don’t see keeping one until it’s paid off anyway. I like change and different things with my vehicles. It’s fun to get one, modify it and move on to the next. I just enjoy it.

I went from 2017 XLT F350 diesel to a 2021 Sport Premium. I owed 10 more months worth of payments on the Ford. It was sitting in the driveway not being used due to me being away all the time. The Tacoma has been here 10 days and is being driven everyday. 0 payments on the Tacoma, owned out right. Now the F350 payments go on the mortgage until that's gone. On the road to freedom from the oilfield.

Good for you! That definitely sounds like a smart move (assuming you didn’t need the f350 capabilities lol). I just got my f150 a few months ago, I’m at that point where if I switch it’s early in my loan that im not losing much. I have years of loan left on this truck anyway. If I was 1 year away from paying it off then I don’t think I could pass up the option of not having a payment

I used to use the large diesels to tow. Got into a habit of always buying them. I figured the F350 would be my last fullsize after 10 yrs of owning it. This past year it's just sat in the yard wasting away in the salt air due to my wife not feeling comfortable using it due to it's size and shit handling in the snow, even in 4wheel drive (yes I had decent tires on it). After being in the small Toyotas in Africa and seeing where they go, I was hooked on them. This Tacoma is a tank in the shit weather, fun to drive and gives me that bit of truck that I require. The big Ford was a nice truck to drive but the build quality was questionable for what you pay for them. Shit was rusting/bubbling a week after I took ownership of it. Local dealer's service dept first words as I walked into their shop was always "you don't have warranty on that" regardless of my warranty status. That gets pretty tiring when something's wrong and you just want it fixed. I was initially looking at just buying used due to knowing the overall quality of the product. After doing some searching, seeing the used prices here locally vrs new, It was cheaper to go new with full warranty. I'll keep this one for 10yrs easy, maybe I'll find a 70 series I can import to play with.

Share a picture of your Ford and of the Tacoma and let us decide. lol

For real tho, have you test driven the tacoma? drive it on 2 different occasions to really feel it out. I still find the tacoma on the small side, and it becomes apparent when trying to fit more than 2 people in it. Just took a 3 hour trip in a 2018 Silverado and the interior was sooo roomy compared to the Taco, Im glad we drove his truck!
