Sorry to beat a horse that is probably long dead, but I'm lookin into getting me a tacoma, probably an '08 automatic double cab 4x4. Current setup has gotten old, '98 jeep with a cummins swapped in.

I digress, back to to horse, When yall talk about Gen1 and Gen2 are you talking about the $1700 kit and the $2100 kits? Trying to figure out what lift I want. Seent a black one a while back with a 6"er with 33" tires and it looked pretty sweet, but not sure what kind of lift to get cus he said in his post something like 6" procomp lift so that doesnt help a lot. Thanks for the advice.

Most of yall have had your mods for several years now from what I've been able to tell, so what would you do different, or what would you have wanted to start out with? Sorry if this is the wrong place for this

You are in the right place man. Let me give you a little help.
1st gen and second gen refer to the years of Tacoma.
1st gen goes until 05 when they changed the body style and wheel base to make them less likely to rollover among other changes.

When we talk lifts, well in this thread is all about the Drop bracket 5"+. These lifts come usually in two stages. Stage one usually being a spacer, drop bracket and AAL & Blocks. Stage 2, full coil overs of different qualities depending on manufacturer.

This is about all I have time to explain now, but ask away and one of us will chime in. Welcome to TW.

Ahhh yeah I got my terms mixed up, kind of meant the stages. Basically I could get the 1st stage and get parts and make it to a stage 2 over time i assume... what is the general most favored 6" lift? preferrably one that could be put on without welding, everything else we can do here, just don't have a welder that handy.

And is there any huge difference in the suspension/axle etc between like an 05 and 08 or 09? I'm strapped for cash so I cant drop 23k for a 2010 4door, looking for a 05-08 basically because they are more around 18k in my area. Anybody trying to get rid of theirs to a loving home? :D.

Checked the for sale area and it was kinda sparse and full of prerunners which is not what im lookin for cus I want to do some offroading and need 4x4 capabilities.

Basically if anybody wants to tell me what they did or liked when they first built theirs i'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks guys

Yeah...I can relate with the kids draining the $$. I have 4 little devils of my own. Reason why I asked is 'cause I have the Stage 1 also. Everything rode fairly well until I added the front bumper. Now I'm a brick on wheels & lost over 1" in the front.

Yes....a bunch of guys have went Stage 1 & then later upgraded to full coil overs when the money was ready. Many also upgrade the rear lift....which consists of a large block under the stock leaf pack....or.....a shorter block with an add-a-leaf combo (depends on which brand of lift you choose). Both of these rear lifts can be swapped with a lift spring pack.....generally runs around another $700+.

I have the Pro Comp kit & the only welding required was adding new turn stops for the lower control arm. You can see the stops in the pic below....

In all honesty.....(I've had this kit since 2007)....I have had no problems with it whatsoever. The ass end does give a rough ride but this ain't my 1st rodeo in lifted rigs...that's all i've really owned. So going in I knew I would want to get rid of the blocks in the rear.

Other than that it's been all good. I have nothing bad to say about my Fabtech lift.

Only shit I want to change:
    1. Leaf pack in back, get rid of blocks
    2. Badass set of shocks up front.

You will need some adjustable shocks up front for that bumper probably. Those fuckers are heavy. Like giving a fat girl a ride on yer hood!!

I concur. Need to replace my fabtech coil overs with some kings and get rid of block setup.

So startin out trying to get to 6" of lift, a stage 1 lift will work? and then it's preferred to add to the rear?
