Thinking about getting a Factor 55 flat link, and started to wonder if this introduces another possible point of failure in the line when winching. I get that it’s a closed system vs. a hook. But the hook connects directly to your tree saver, where you need to also add a shackle if you use a Factor 55. I haven’t seen these in use before, but am I overthinking this?

Overthinking it. The chances of failure under typical loads is incredibly small.

Only thing to be worried about is making sure you installed the c clip correctly so the pin is locked in.

Yeah the more I thought about this, a hook also has a pin that can fail, plus it’s an open system.

I always use a shackle on a tree saver strap, regardless of winch hook or link setup. you always want to hook metal to metal whenever possible. rigging 101.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
If you're using synthetic look at Factor55's "Splicer." When I get around to a winch that's the way I'm going.
