So, after over 2 1/2 years (just 18k miles), my 36 month bumper to bumper will be up come April.

So far, so good, with exception of rear diff leak.

What do those of us nearing the end of the bumper to bumper on the 3rd gen need to really look for in order to possibly identify an issue which may not have yet reached critical mass. I mean grabbing mirrors, flashlights, crawling under truck and looking in every nook and cranny giving the truck the "doctor crawling up your ass with a camera" type of inspection.

Want to make sure the common items are clear, or at least get any issues in and documented before warranty is up.

    Things I'm aware of.

Rear diff leak (my 3rd member replaced due to leak 6 months ago, and likely covered under drivetrain warranty at any rate)

    Rear diff howl

    Timing chain cover leak

    Valve cover leaks

    3rd break light leak

Needle bearing vibrations (no worries for me, went ECGS)

Battery issues, slow / no crank (mine replaced under warranty 6 mo's ago)

Paint issues (not sure of problem locations, but know a few have had them).

    Hood vibration / adhesion issue

Tachometer / gauges needle flutter issue

Some would be fairly noticeable, some would be covered under powertrain, but wondering if there's anything else to dig for early signs on.

Oh, I intend to. But it has, unfortunately, lived a bit of a sheltered life for its first three years due to a health issue, and have been unable to get it out much to put it through its paces.

I expect it will take a beating and still give me the same level of exceptional and trouble free service the 2002 did for 15 years. I'm not one to come to the forums and panic because of all the issues on the boards. But if a little due diligence can identify any potential issues now and have it taken care of on Toyota's dime, that's far better than having it taken care of on my dime in a year or two, or 5k or 10k miles down the road.

I'm gonna treat it like a used car transaction, as once the 36k is up, I own most of the issues (less drivetrain). Identifying a minor issue now which could turn into a considerably deal after I "own" the issue is what I'm after. Many issues can be missed by many of us as just being off our radar, where a closer inspection when one knows what they're looking for can spot it early.

How bummed would I be to find my paint in the door sill or jam flaking away at 40 months because I didn't know from Tacomaworld to pull back the weather seal and inspect underneath?

Pretty damned bummed. That's the kind of thing most would never know to even look for were it not for the forum, and what I was getting at.
