For the life of me, i could never rev match properly with that POS. That was my biggest complaint on stock tune + accumulator.

Are those full Otto cycle tunes?

Because there is definitely a big difference between full Otto cycle and Atkinson cycle tune.

I've had my '22 OR MT for about 6 months now and I love it. The only times I don't like anything about it is right after reading a thread like this, when all the little quibbles people mention are on my mind and I can't help but pay particular attention to them.

It's all about expectations. My last three vehicles were a '95 Taco, '19 Civic, and 08' Cayman S. I knew the MT wouldn't compare to the Porsche or Honda, but expected it to be better than the 25 year old one on my old truck. And it is.

Toyota/Aisin designed built the 997 generation manual transmissions. It's based on Tacoma RA/RC transmission architecture... so we should be able to get Porsche shift quality. :D

With the TSB that fixed the issues, a stock MT is far more enjoyable to drive then an AT.

But some like MT, some like AT... Both have pros and cons.

What bets fits YOUR needs and wants?

Been a manual guy all my life, sports cars and trucks. Shifter and throws in 3rd gen are ok, currently at 5k miles and they have got better after break in. Throttle response though is horrible and throttle mapping is bad. Part of it may also have to do with the accumulator which I have not yet gotten around to. I also have a 2001 Tacoma and the manual tranny and engine response in low gears is much much better and way more fun.

Accumulator will help the clutch feel better to operate but it won’t do anything to fix the horrible throttle response. I don’t know why they made it the way they did with the stock mapping. Tune helps a lot although the boosted sporty throttle setting on mine feels a bit artificial at times.

Yes the accumulator would be to fix the horrible clutch feel. Stock mapping I just dont understand. While I will always prefer an actual throttle cable there are plenty of manufacturers that do drive by wire properly. My M4 manual transmission throttle mapping is amazing, but even something like my Grand Cherokee mapping is way better than the Tacoma

Yep, agreed. I can not fathom why they made it the way they did. Some might say because EPA, but that’s a false argument because I always had to practically floor it to get it to move. So that wasn’t exactly great for emissions.

I have never agreed on something posted on TW like this before. This is exactly my experience.

Additionally, I’ve had two MT Tacoma’s. A 17 and now a 22. the 17 shifter was longer and “notchier”. The clutch pedal was heavier. The stock tune, complete garbage.

on the 22, Toyota shortened the shifts, the gates are tighter and the pedal is easier to depress. Shifting is almost car like. The stock tune is improved, but I still opted for the tune, OTT Spicy. I didn’t tell my wife when I got it tuned in the morning. Later in the day she drove it for some errands and when she came back she said, “you got it tuned right?” Her first car was a danger ranger MT so I had to wife her right away.

I just need to get around to doing the accumulater mod.

Interesting to hear your take on the differences between 17/22. I have a 21, not sure which one it’s more close to. I did drive a friend’s 2016 in 2020, but that was around the block and at the time, I was driving an auto frontier after having just sold my 5MT 05 ranger 3.0. So I didn’t have much to compare to besides my old YJ and the Ranger. Then I got the Frontier and loved it but it had a few unfortunate problems mostly PO related. Couldn’t find a decent frontier and I wanted something different so I went with the taco. I do like it but yeah, not sure what Toyota is thinking on the tuning. OTT super spicy has been good to me but I think when I 4.88 swap, I’m going to dial the throttle setting back. Idk, we’ll see. Obviously I’ll swap gears first and then see if I want to mess with it at that point. It was insane the difference I felt with the tune in 1st gear. I always felt so bogged down due to the dead gas pedal response. The tune immediately made it feel like a regear almost even though it wasn’t. Just because it was so responsive.

with the accumulator gone I have no real clutch/pedal complaints. I have not had any of the noises everyone complains about either, knock on wood. We’ll see if that ages well. The shifter is still a bit notchy for my liking. It likes to grind into 2nd at times. Going to try Ravenol 75w-90 semi-synth and see if it helps. Sometimes a bit of petroleum lube clings better and actually improves feel over a full synth. We’ll see.

10K and so far so good. Just waiting on availability with the gear guy to regear. I really can’t wait for the results that. Come on, February.

Are you asking me what the physical process is or how it improves anything on a vehicle with a manual?

As far as I know, you can not tune a manual transmission. If you can, please do tell.
