I'm currently awaiting the arrival of my 2016 Tacoma DC SR5. I asked my dealer how much it would cost to have undercoating applied once the vehicle arrives.

The dealer says the factory undercoating from Toyota is sufficient.

I'm suspicious to say the least.

Anyone know if this is true?

i had my dealer do the toyota undercoat before taking delivery of my truck. i got under and looked at the work as i used to do undercoats and they did good job. i did it primarily bc the roads i drive in the winter have that de-icer crap all over them that causes rust and it helps protect from that. i also wash the undercarriage regularly and i am thinking about buying some fluid film to do a light coat as well. interested to see what others have to say

There is no factory undercoating. All undercoating comes from the dealership or distributor. A lot of the time, though, they will charge you for undercoating but they will have never 'installed' it

I manual brushed and used my hands to coat the underbody with wheel bearing grease. It repels the water nicely..the wields need the coating the most.

I double checked mine and there is no undercoating at all. I used to live in Canada where there is lots of ice, sand, and salt. Definitely need it up there. I am in Texas past 16 years so not too much snow here. Talk to the dealership Service Manager and he/she will know more. I wanted a block heater for mine when I travel up to Northern Canada; they didn't have one, but he called a northern dealership to get the info we needed. I am sure just a call would be great to see exactly what is used for the proper undercoating.

There are all types of under coating. Just make sure to get the insides of the front frame. They usually rot from the inside out. The area right next to the converters is one of the
common spots. Ive seen them pretty much rust free but rotted right there.

The dealership I first visited, I asked about this service specifically. It was $650, but they only pitched the undercoating as a way to "deaden the sound by 30%." They refused to say that it prevented rust. Maybe it was for legal reasons. Maybe she was just stupid.

Most undercoatings are a tar based substance that harden up will promote rust. The undercoating will crack and hold water/salt against the frame. The best prevention is an oil based application such as Rustcheck or Krown.
