My radio cut out recently and never turned back on.. After taking everything apart, I still don't have an answer. After some testing, I can tell that the remote in (Tells the radio to turn on, also known as ignition wire) is grounded out. All fuses test good; inside and under the hood. Anyone have any experience with this happening? I read that sometimes manufacturers include an in-line fuse thing that melts on overload; do we have something like that? I'm about to snip it and connect an external remote to the lead, but that is just a Band-Aid and doesn't explain why it no longer receives power. Anyone have ideas?

its called a fuseable link (not sure thats spelled correctly), dunno if it does. Personally I would take it in for warranty.

Maybe not much help, but the last Toyota headunit I messed with (Tundra) required the antenna to be grounded before you could get power to the main harness. That took me hours of wasted time to figure out why I couldn't get any power, and I've never seen anything like it before.

So even thought you are getting power to the remote in, check you are getting power to the main power in.

I still get constant 12v on the main power supply, just can't get the ignition wire to turn hot and it gives me a really strong ground for some reason.

Yeah, 100% my fault. I've re done my sounds system and apparently squished the wire on a metal bracket behind the HVAC controls. The bottom half fell a bit free (hence why the fuse stayed good) but the upper half stuck to the bracket (apparently very well grounded). I feel like an idiot and found the issue tracing the line from harness in the kick panel all the way to head unit. Oops.

I had to take my dash apart as well, and my aftermarket radio is giving me a hard time. I know it worked fine before taking the dash apart, so where is my short!
    Good job OP

Are you getting power to the connector? Ignition and constant? Let's work this together brotha!

I am. So this is where my problem is: the wiring was done by a previous owner but the ACC wire is going straight to a ground and blowing a fuse. But if I remove that pigtail that connects it to ground, my radio turns on but shows "CHECK WIRING" I don't understand. It's a JVC radio. The plugs connect only one way but its boggling my mind.
The white wire with black stripe is ground.
The harness that was made for this has a connector into this plug connecting into another blue one that had a jumper from this ground to a ACC grey wire. So wierd.

So if I read that correctly, the wiring completed the circuit from the ACC wire directly over to the Ground (White+B) wire? That's clearly a no-go.. If you don't mind cutting the wires, I would snip them and reattach in the right spot. Should solve both problems and would just take 2 butt connectors.

No it's fine. Yes, you read that perfectly sorry I was in a rush when I was replying that time. I know it's a no-go..just don't understand why when I disconnect that white/b strip wire, my radio will turn on and say "check wiring" over and over again.
I know that's where my problem is, I've had my cousin try and take his dash apart to show me his volt readings on the wires. The wires are good..just don't understand why it's doing this when the connectors can only go in one way and it worked before..
    Thank you for the reply!

Also, diagrams in my hanes manual and online don't show the correct wiring colors for the stock harness connectors

Yes on my 2000. I had to take all the dash apart! Whoever wired the radio in must've not done it right?

Well, you said it used to work before so maybe not. Those connectors look like R30's, 6 pins on the bottom with 4 up top. The only pin that should get constant ground is pin 7, the dark brown on the bottom row of the blue connector (Matches with either orange or red on the factory connector, hard to tell from the picture). The top right wires are your power; far right is constant and white w/black is ACC. If that white w/black gets ground after you turn the truck on (leave the jumper out of it) you have the same problem I did and will have to trace the wire back to the fuse block on the drivers side until you find the short :annoyed:. If it goes hot, but grounds with the jumper installed, you may have bigger problems. A faulty aftermarket harness (The blue one) or worse; a short in the head unit itself.

Forums are hard; I want to help so bad but am a much better in person colleague.
