factory oem drums have a gasket?

has anyone else noticed that when they did a brake job that the factory oem rear drums they found they have a paper gasket on them?

just doing my rear brakes and sure enough there is a paper stuck onto them and its cut out and shaped as a gasket to fit between the hub and drum.

I had to clean mine off and wire wheel the drum to remove it so it fit flush as it should.

granted such a thing I doubt would be enough to cause an out of balance issue if it were removed then replaced in a different orientation but I suppose it could I just never saw anything like this before.

also yes this is genuine factory original oem Toyota drums and brakes that were never changed, they are not something aftermarket that someone put on the truck.

I can only assume it was there to help it to release "maybe???" but it is very strange

luckily 95% came off with it stuck to the drum so it was easy to wire wheel that away

taking a break to post this as I cool off before I do the other side and I hope that one is just as easy to clean up

 

ok, got the other side done and it was in much better condition.

this time I could plainly see Toyota design printed on the gasket and its wax covered paper gasket.

I guess its there to prevent the drum from sticking so it comes off easier ????????

I dunno, I do know im not going to Toyota dealer to try and explain what they are and see if you can buy these gaskets lol

rear brake drum gasket lol and it costs less then $1
