Please provide support for this statement that does not come from Jiffy Lube or the oil companies.

No auto manufacturer has specified 3000 miles change intervals in over 20 years.
Toyota used to specify 7500 ON NON SYNTHETIC OIL as "normal service" until they began adding the "Maintenance Required" light in the 2000-2005 span.
    Only the 2.7
    The 4.0 requires 5w30.

I feel that this question (prob only second to "what size tire" threads) would answer itself if you just looked at your oil cap...

    To OP,
You don't have to change it until 5k, but I've done all my new cars at 500. Really no downside to doing it then. I believe the engines of yesteryear required it to remove any assembly lube and particulates that are bound to flake off. I can only imagine that it still happens to some degree today even with the tighter tolerances.

Also, no problem switching to synthetic. Cars that have been run for tens or hundreds of thousands of miles with Dino oil are the ones that may experience "problems" switching. And that's only because the same properties that let synthetic oil get into more places, allow it to get between seals and such.

0w20 or 5w20 is the generally required oil. My '09 manual says that 5w30 can be used in hotter climates. I change oil at 3,000 miles due to my own choosing.

And you have the 2.7, not the 4.0 like OP.

has anybody found a way to add a oil sample port, their are great oil sample supplies from checkfluid my customers use on heavy equipment, you can pull an oil sample with engine running getting a more representative oil sample

Went to local Toyota dealer yesterday to buy 90915-YZZD3 oil filter for my Tacoma's first oil change. Dealer had several qts. of Toyota 5W-30 conventional oil stacked up near the counter. Out of curiosity I asked about the price of this oil. $3.82 a qt.

Went ahead and bought this product while I was there. Saved me a trip to Walmart where I would have bought Mobil 5000 5W-30 for pretty much the same price.
