    1997 Tacoma, Ext Cab, 4x4, 3RZ, A/T, Manual locking hubs
    This transmission is a 23 spline input and fits the 4 cylinder 3RZ, not sure where OP got his info but my info is confirmed. I am sure the transmission fits other models when swapping the bell housing & intermediate transfer case housing, very quick/easy to do.
