99% agree with that statement.. Mobil1 is not what it used to be. Ever since the Castrol / Mobil lawsuit, the "synthetic" lines have been blurred beyond recognition. My opinion, Mobil1 0W40 "European Formula" is probably the last of the great synthetic oils though.. The VW 502.00 spec is extremely stringent in that only an extremely synthetic oil can be approved. The same goes for any other mfg's that meets that spec.

Could be? I need to look into it further. The need for conventional oil to support the additive package was 15yr old info stuck in my head. That was why I asked.

To make matters even worse, "Fully Synthetic" & "100% Synthetic" mean two completely different things now. That's why all the oil on the WalMart shelf says "Fully Synthetic", while Amsoil & other high end oils claim "100%" on the bottle. Two different meanings now..

The crux of the matter is, no normal human knows what is good or what is not good. We are told “synthetic is good” so we go along with that. If some different society claimed “synthetic is bad”, we’d go along with that as well.

The ONLY thing that matters is approvals and ratings, and perhaps test results, which are the tools we use to cut through the marketing and assumptions.

As I mentioned in another thread on a different subject, many extremely expensive and complex electrical devices I work on require Lanolin (sheep oil)-based greases in their critical mechanisms as certain properties of Lanolin exceed the properties of ones we can manufacture from petroleum.

Spider silk is also a good example of a natural product with extreme properties of strength that cannot easily be replicated by humans from other base stocks. If you could have a spider-silk winch cable, it would beat out dyneema rope.

Synthetic / Fully Synthetic / 100% Synthetic. I don’t really care about those terms as long as the oil in question meets the specified requirements, and I have confidence I’m not being lied to. Past that, it’s just a case of “choose your favourite label”.

In addition the 2GR and 2TR aren't exactly special care & feeding performance engines (e.g. high boost, 100+hp/cylinder); use any oil the meets the spec requirements and you'll be good to go.

But I would love to know how toyota and other brands maintained engine longevity while using less viscous oils.
I'm guessing closer tolerances, increased oil pressure, and using vvti and programming to possibly cut power at lower rpm to counter the lower oil shear strengths?

Interesting interview re: upcoming oil vis oils:

Absolutely agree! When it is all said & done, any quality oil will work in our engines at a 5K oil change interval. No way on 10k! (IMO)
I'm not touching the service interval subject on a Thursday :):):):)

And what about the "10k for the oil may be fine, but can the filter maintain efficiency throughout the interval and not go to the bypass valve" debate (another Friday oil thread idea :anonymous:

Just like you have a boss, Toyota has a boss too. It's called the EPA. Toyota & other mfg's guarantee the engine with the approved oil (TOO THIN) for it's warranty span, not a mile over. Read between the lines & use common sense on what you need to do.
That's another hornets nest of a subject for a Thursday. :):):):)

Well. Let's not go that far. If Taco motors were puking their guts out at 60,001mi, Toyota would ripe for an FCA buyout. Hell, if 1% of Taco motors puked their guts out at 60,001mi . . .

I was told this is the help group for Toyota owners who don’t obsess over oil?

I started noticing the signs about a few years back, when people would routinely fight over oil quality and intervals. It’s almost as if... as if...

I didn’t care. Oh god it feels so good to say it out loud.

OEM filters, the grade the manual calls for, and anywhere between 5k and 10k whenever the mood strikes.

This. I have a Toyota...where the engine still runs after 20 years with an abusive owner who rarely changed oil.
