Factory Tires Rubbing

    Well what the heck my factory tires are rubbing. It clears with room on flat level ground while parked but rubs when going down hill or slowing down to turn. snapped this photo pulling out of my driveway which is a on a hill.


    I don’t remember the rubbing before I changed the LBJs but I haven’t owned the truck long. What can cause this?

    It's less Tacoma and more mod
    How does it drive on the road, kinda a handful, wandering and pulling? Might have worn out lower control arm bushings which can cause the wheel to move into he well under different strains

    It drives pretty normal but I’ll check the bushings anyway. Thanks

    That kind of looks like the LCAs are adjusted or slipped towards the rear. Is it the same both sides? Maybe check the LCA cam adjusters.

    They are not exactly the same but not radically different from one another.

    I had the same issue on my tundra. Shocks were worn out, still handed fine. After shock/ spring replacement front was noticeably higher.

    Thanks for the reply. Looking at photos of other 1st gens online it does seem like my front end sags a bit lower.

    Even if it is a bit lower I would think factory size tires would be able to turn and not hit the wheel even at pretty compressed position. I'm not 100% on that. Maybe someone else will chime in.

    When did you change the LBJs? Was it yesterday? Can you shoot a picture from the front and the rear of both front tires? Let's see what is going on with the knuckle, coilover, LBJs and outer ties.

    You also posted about dragging brakes... perhaps its all tied in together.

    Something is not right.

    I changed the lower ball joints last weekend but I don’t really drive this truck except for fun. I noticed the rubbing thing pretty much right after the LBJ change. I haven’t gotten the truck alignment done as I’m going to replace the suspension in the new few weeks.

    These pics are probably not helpful at all. I’ll clean the snow and ice out and get some better pics when the sun comes up.

    I’m almost certain my brake issue is related to a failed master cylinder. I have a new one on order. Unfortunately packages take around 9 days to get delivered where I live. Hopefully I can update that thread here in the next few days.

    Yep, at first glance nothing jumps out. Looks like a normal stock suspension 1st gen. If it was right after you did the LBJs, then I'd start there. Definitely take it in for an alignment after you're done with your changes.

    Did you loosen your LCA cams when you did the LBJs?

    Your original post said "factory tires" so I assume they are 31x10.50x15. Is that what you have?

    The wheel in his pic is a 16". The TRD option came with those wheels and 265/70/16 tires. I have 4 of those collecting spider webs in the shed.

    Can't say for certain on the 01 but 02-04 had either 225/75/15 or 265/70/16. There may be others but that is what the sticker shows on my DS door frame.

    I would do an alignment before chasing any corrective repairs. That will tell you if your caster or camber is causing the issue.

    A quick measure side to side to see if the wheel is sitting different in the opening can be done also.

    Factory tires for a 2001 trd are 265/75/16

    The front wheel gap is significantly different between passenger and driver. It’s gotta be a caster issue.

    I believe factory size for 2001 TRD (and others) is actually 265/70/16, not 75.

    Yeah, it sure sounds like you need an alignment and might have "32s" instead of the original "31s". That would do it.
