They wouldn’t be able to swap them. The OEM has cuts in the bed rail and hooks installed from the factory. That’s why the dealerships can’t sell them aftermarket.

If you were local I would trade my Oem cover for a truxedo lo pro lq, everything you would need.

I got the OEM cover when I bought my 2020 Sport Premium. By buying it with the truck and having the dealership install it, it is covered under the Toyota warranty. Although I love mine and I think it's a great product, I was unlucky and had to have it replaced twice.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/cracked-oem-2020-hard-tonneau-cover.659103/

The first one had a 5 inch crack along the lip over the tailgate and the second one had a chip at one of the joints. Both of these were likely there from the get go as I hadn't really used the cover at all. Both times they swapped the cover. The second time it took a good 4-5 weeks for them to get a new cover in. So there may be a problem in the supply chain likely because of the pandemic (at least maybe here in Canada)...

Sounds correct. I can't recall what toyota billed me for the cover on my 6' access cab bed, but pretty sure it was $600 something.

If you're already getting the Extang Solid-Fold for $520, you got a great deal on it. It's a strong cover and holds up extremely well.

    Be happy with that.

This is how the 6' sits. Flush to the bed. Doesn't leak where it touches (water gets in around the tailgate, something the OEM doesn't stop either, hence the MaxSeal).

I just picked up my 2020 Tacoma OR as well, and as part of the deal, I asked them to include the Toneau Cover. They had to order it so I wonder how this will play out if it does need special rails?

I bought an Undercover Ultra Flex. It's great, secure, and I got it at a good price. After rebate and sale it was $689 plus tax. The panels are aluminum instead of plastic/vinyl. It mounts on the factory rails, is easy to remove, and includes a bed light. Five year warranty isn't bad either.

I bought it local from Sportsland (I think they build Undercover since the buildings are side by side) in Rogersville, MO. Their price was $899 (I think). They had a $100 rebate and $110 sale. Give them a call and they'll probably give you a deal.

You can take your bed rails and remove them and then cut the notches out for the pins . There actually marked on the under side of the bed rail with a template of where to cut them. I traded my 16 in that came with the factory cover and part of the deal I told them I was keeping my cover. I took the rails off and cut them with a jig saw. Super easy and i didnt have to swap the rails from my 16 to my 19. Just need to make sure you grab all the hardware.

Currently debating between keeping the Extang, or getting a refund and going for LoMax or MX4. I think I'm leaning towards the LoMax currently; thanks everyone for their feedback.

The dealer hasn't come back and said whether or not the cover is OEM yet though (just want to verify 100% with them).

Whatever you get, you're going to want to seal around the tailgate.

Also make sure that whatever cover you get has header rail seals. They close the tiny gaps on either side of the cab rail where it meets the bed sides. You need a robust torx to get those bolts out - Toyota is proud of how they get put in.

You swap the bedrail caps as well. It’s exceptionally common. (I have both sets cut and uncut from my swap). Also the bedrail caps have identical part# Printed in the plastic as well, so they simply cut them at the factory.

EDIT Also you can actually buy them from the dealer, but each piece is priced individually and not as a kit, so it works out to be $1800 in parts for a full cover.

here is a video of the swap, it literally takes 10 minutes.

nothing. It’s also common practice here. I bought mine used as I ruled out all aftermarket options after I looked at them, everything bolts up, all mountings you need are in all beds the from the factory.

Same thing happened to me. Ordered one from the local Toyota dealer thinking I was getting the OEM cover and after I picked it up noticed it was aftermarket. I got lucky and found one on CL because the guy put a camper shell on but I did have to buy the precut caps.

My neighbor has an aftermarket tonneau cover on his full size chevy 6' bed. I've looked at and its lighter, and larger than my tacoma factory cover. Both are able to fold in similar sections. Can't figure why the toyota cover has to weigh so much.

I stand corrected. You taught me something new. I guess I should have expected it being easy to swap them.

I've never seen up close how the OEM latches, but the pins or what not look way more secure than the kind that use wires.

I realized I could break in there in 10 seconds using a coat hanger, but that does not seem likely on the OEM.

You close the tailgate on the OEM, then close the tonneau and it’s supposed to latch and lock when slammed down. It’s holding at the latch pins.

With the Extang and several others, there are large internal latches that can’t be pried up. You lock the tonneau first, then close the tailgate. My experience is with the Extang and it’s been extremely secure.

OEM you can do either way, I actually prefer to close / latch it, then close the tailgate.

If you know how they work, you can break into any of them with a “slim Jim”. Simply because of where the latch is on the OEM (Tucked up out the way of cargo) would make it a lot fiddler, but none are secure to anyone who can use a slim Jim on a door.

Been a few months...how are you liking the Ultra flex? I just looked at it at a dealer here.
