So I have had my 2016 Tacoma for about a week. We have had some rain and the Tonneau seems to be leaking quite a bit. I am not exactly sure from where but it is pretty wet from along the sides to the middle in the back half of the truck. Has anyone else had this much leaking and did you figure out a way to fix it?

The factory tonneau is not completely waterproof.. Make sure the tie down cleats are not in the way of the cover. I don't believe there's much you can do, but perhaps someone has had success.

It does allow a little water, and yea the tie down cleats can get in the way of the clips so you may need to move those.

Like others said; it's not completely water tight.

What I did on mine was during a sunny day, I looked inside to see where I could see light and applied black caulking to seal most of the "cracks". It improved a lot.

Be careful not to make a mess though! I knew what I was doing so for the average Joe, you can't see where I did it.

Make sure the tie down cleats are out of the way and that the cover is fully clicked down. I always go around and press right above the latch and it typically clicks one more time. It's still not 100% but it's fairly close, at least mine is.

I did double check the cleats and they are out of the way. I am a bit confused about the caulk. Where did you put it? If I caulk around the cover, I will not be able to lift it. I must be misunderstanding something here.o_O

I did the same caulking process and it remediated all water drips at the front of the bed. I basically pulled a Houdini by getting inside the bed on a sunny day with the tonneau and tailgate closed and then used a black silicon caulk to seal any small opening that had light illuminating thru it. I did not caulk the area where the cover and the bed meet. I then parked the truck at a different angle in order to get the sun shining into the bed from a different angle. My wife was kind enough to open the tailgate and let me out when I completed the caulking.

Yeah I agree my post was vague! I did not put some around the cover!
Mostly where I indicated in the picture.
Where the arrow is, is where the little foam things are installed that came with my Extang Solid Fold 2.0 to seal the opening between the top rail near the cab and the side rails. It's a big opening and water comes in easily in this spot.

It's a cover that is identical to the Toyota one.

Glad that you wife let you out. I will crawl in a look around. Thanks. I had an Extang Solid Fold on a Tundra that leaked and I will able to use some weather stripping to seal around the cover. The hinges where is folded also leaked but it was minimal. The Tacoma cover is leaking alot.

This. I've commented several times on here that after moving the cleats and making sure it locks to the second click my factory tonneau cover leaks maybe one or two DROPS now. I've had my tonneau in heavy, heavy rain and have taken the truck through a self car wash with the pressurized sprayer and no leaks. Maybe I'm the only one who has a good tonneau and they felt bad for my truck and tried to make up for it after putting in such a shit transmission.

Mine leaks from the back of the wheel well to the tailgate. May try the caulking.

My cleats are definitely out of the way and every latch is double clicked and mine leaks quite a bit as well. One of these days I'll take a closer look and see if there's anywhere it can be adjusted or anything that clearly needs to be sealed up. Maybe just pulling it off and putting it back on will get things to work better.

Appreciate the help but the Extang is definitely a different design than the factory tonneau.

    You sure?
Because side by side they look the same! (The solid (3 pieces) one).

Maybe they don't attach the same way to the bed, but they sure do sit the same way.

If they don't attach the same way to the bed, then doesn't that made them different?!

They both are three piece covers that sit on top of the rails and rely on weather stripping to seal between the cover and the bed, but that doesn't mean they are identical.

The point was to talk about waterproofness.

Yes, but part of what makes these more or less waterproof/water-resistant IS how they attach, so saying they are the same cover, but they attach different doesn't make sense.

It's not how they attach that make them waterproof. It's how they sit with the weatherstrip and if it's well adjusted.
Spring handle (Extang) or Latch (Toyota) makes no difference.

You're just playing with words lol.

But it's a different cover with different weatherstripping that attaches differently and the rail caps need to be modified differently. It's built somewhere else to different tolerances by different people.

It's not wordplay, man. It's a different damn cover. Everyone appreciates you trying to help, but you need to accept that your cover is not the same one.
