My dad failed his LA emissions test in his 16 Tacoma 3.5 for readiness not reading. I live out of state from him but set him up with an Ultragauge to monitor trans temps for towing thanks to @tacoma04. Anyone able to post on this thread pics to help walk him through seeing readiness on his Ultragauge? I sent him their instructions but he's not able to find it. Thanks!

Car is under emissions warranty in California. Take it to the dealer?

Did you disconnect the battery or interrupt power to the ecu anytime prior to getting the inspection done? reason I ask, car has to complete a drive cycle for readiness points to be available. If you cant get the Ultragauge set up, just drive the vehicle about 100 miles. Also if you go to autozone they dont mind throwing an scanner on it to check readiness.

Sorry, LA=Louisiana. We disconnected the battery back in April to install the trailer harness. Battery was replaced March of last year.

Ok, that means since April, the truck has been driven in or around 100 miles. Or has it just sat?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
When he goes for the test do not shut the truck off. Leave it idling in the parking lot while waiting for the test. The engine has to be hot

Like I said before, need to see what service,or services are not coming up as ready. Also, If the truck has never been through a complete drive cycle your required amount of services may not display as ready, even though the battery was disconnected more than a month ago.

Emissions not ready just means he needs to put more miles on it. Whenever the battery gets disconnected or a code gets erased it resets the emissions monitors. Takes a certain amount of driving and driving conditions for them to be ready again

"What does it mean for a vehicle to be “Not-Ready”? “Not Ready” failures imply that a vehicle’s readiness monitors have not been fully reset. The onboard computer resets anytime there is an uncommon electrical event within the car. The most common causes are removing the battery cables, jumpstarting another vehicle, adding out-of-market electrical equipment to the vehicle, and clearing DTCs from the computer. When the onboard computer has been reset, the vehicle must be driven in a certain manner determined by the manufacturer, called a ‘drive cycle’. This drive pattern usually involves a normal combination of city and highway driving for about two weeks. Contact your vehicle’s manufacturer or LDEQ for specific drive cycles. There may be nothing wrong with your vehicle. After completing the drive cycle, return the vehicle to the motor vehicle inspection station for a retest"

I read this again, Is the emission tester not able to communicate to retrieve the data?

"Vehicles that fail due to non-communication fail because the vehicle’s onboard computer did not send a signal to the emissions testing equipment. Occasionally, a vehicle can come off of the assembly line with defects. A non-communication can be the result of a poorly assembled OBD connection port, a blown fuse, or a combination of scenarios involving the inspection process. Check the vehicle’s cigarette lighter to see if it works. If it does not, chances are the fuse is blown. Most manufacturers design vehicles so that the OBD and cigarette lighter run on the same circuit. The fuse is faulty if it is dark inside like the inside of a blown light bulb or if the electrical wires within the fuse are burnt apart and are not connected. In the event of a ”non-comm”, the motorist is instructed to contact the Emissions Challenge Station, where the vehicle will be retested and, if necessary, receive a separate diagnostic scan."

I have not checked readiness with Ultragauge. I did take a quick look and did not see it. I will try to find the Ultragauge info on how to get to it.

Thanks for the replys. It was actually driven to Mississippi and to the coast besides stop and go when it had failed. He bought a OBDII code reader with the I/M Readiness. Checked again on Monday and finally the cat and heated o2 were ready. Once everything is ready does it stay ready or do these 2 have to be hot every time it's started to clear?

The other day the ABS light came on during one drive but has not returned :(
