IDK - I doubt many of them can operate the third pedal..
We have had several armed car/jackings where I live
They bail when they see the shifter

Also a LEO friend of mine agreed with my logic

I don't think he was trying to steal the truck, probably looking to steal what's inside. He broke the drivers window so he will be sitting on glass if he drives it away, thieves usually go for passenger or back window .

I'd google "US Law Shield" in case you catch a thief in action since anything in their hands can be considered a deadly weapon, and this works in states such as WA which block USCCA and NRA so-called "carry coverage" since they are an actual insurance company.

However, thieves are able to steal newer vehicles by disconnecting the fender to get access to the headlight wiring which is connected into the CANBUS system nowadays that everything has sensors. They use a module that "tells" the system to disable the alarm and unlock the doors. Then with physical access they get in and start the vehicle and drive away. Practiced thieves can do this in a few minutes.

It will require a new CANBUS system design to prevent this type of theft and that won't be completed and wired into vehicles for many years. There is a technical writeup done by an electronic engineer who had his car stolen and recovered and did analysis on how it was accomplished if memory serves.

Thankfully I park in my garage at home, and in a secured lot at work, but when I go Mall Crawling, I use the Club. Minor deterrent, but a deterrent never less....

If they want it bad enough, not worth losing sleep over it!

P.S. I have nothing visible showing in the vehicle to entice them.

    • T.0 Alarmed triggered
    • T.0+1min I showed up at my Window, called 911
    • T.0+2min I was out, street was quiet
    • T0.+4min cop were on site. I was surely impressed of the response time.
"My" Cop said third pedal or because I showed myself rather quickly.
Few folks here are convinced it's the MT.

But the Toyota Mechanic who showed me how to seriously disabled the car while waiting for the installation of more practical solutions said thief bailed when he saw a key socket instead of press to start button. Apparently the recent Toyota's with hard/"smart" keys are at another level. While still defeatable, it's no longer a 15s OBD hack and involves valuable and time consuming actions to take the vehicles. So much that most of the vehicles equipped with these keys are stolen using a flatbed.

The old timer security expert that I'm dealing with now, said the same thing. These new hard keys are no fun and it's the most probable cause of why they fled so fast.
He, like many of you is also a kill switch advocate. He said the 10x more expensive IGLA/GHOST systems are nice when they work. But they involve so many splicing and crimping that sooner of later users may end up with electrical problems very hard to troubleshoot.

His solutions are simple and time/field proven. For most of you who don't mind pulling a dash apart and looking at few videos, it's easy DYI. I don't mind spending few extra dollars and have it done by a pro who does it with 3 years warranty.

+4 minutes - that is good!

I'd be lucky if the police got here in 20 minutes..
Hence the shotgun and 110# dog - if you don't run when you hear that thing rack a load then :notsure:

I was under the impression firearm acquisition was as easy for both end of this conversation. ie If you engage with a firearm, this can also "lead" (pun intended) to an exchange of rounds flying both ways.

Most thieves carrying, will rather flee. They keep their gun as a last resort. But if you push hard enough, you might end up at the other end of their barrel too.

Apparently in Canada, criminals uses/hires/coerces under age teens. If they are cut in the act and first offense, it's catch and release. They get a slap on the wrist without criminal records. Then they are back on the streets doing the same.

My truck was empty, except for a knife I keep in the glove box. It was still there after. But made me go hmmmmmm.
No more knife in the truck :) If they want a knife, they can bring their own. :p

What kind of a moron in 2023 tries to steal a car... I think its time you get a firearm, or a K9. If you live in that kind of a neighborhood. First its your truck parked by your house, next might be your house.

Happens every single day. Its 2023, the world is filled with morons.. Happens in broad daylight, in the nicest of neighborhoods too; its not always about living in a certain type of neighborhood. But this story sounds more like an attempted smash and grab to me, looking for cash/guns/high value items.

I will say though, first its your truck, then its your house, is a very very plausible thing. Aside from this story taking place at OP's home, its not uncommon for thieves to steal a vehicle, and then hit the residence afterwards. Had a friend get his truck stolen at a concert, from a gated/security guarded parking deck. Thief then hit the "go home" button on the gps/nav head unit, pulled up to his house while he was enjoying the concert, hit the garage door button, and robbed every nice thing in his house in under just a few minutes; tv's, dvd players/consoles, jewelry, tools, everything except furniture basically. Neighbors thought nothing of it because it was his truck that pulled up to the house.

and that's exactly why all my gps markers are 6-10 blocks away. gets me close enough to directions home(once i'm within 30min of home, i don't need it anyways), and confuddles everyone else!
