Failed - Tried installing Wildpeak A/T3W - LT275/70R17 on OEM Rim

    To everyone,

    I am a total noob on truck modification and made a big mistake. I tried to install a larger tire on my OEM rims and failed. The tire was too broad and it was touching my control arm. I searched the site but I could not find a detailed solution.

    I have the following:

    1) 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport - Double Cab
    2) ARB Old Man Emu 2 Inch Lift Kit (Heavy Load) - OMETAC16HKSB
    3) 2019 TACOMA TRD SPORT OEM ORIGINAL ALLOY WHEEL - 17 X 7.5 / OFFSET 30

    I tried installing Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - LT275/70R17 on my OEM rims and it was touching my control arm.

    I have three questions:

    1) What is the largest tire size that will fit on OEM rims with a truck with a 2-inch lift? (no rubbing)
    2) If I want to keep the new tires (Wildpeak) which rim do you recommend – I don’t want to spend too much. And what offset and rim size do I need to clear the control arm?
    3) Is there other options to keep the new tire and use the existing OEM rims? Someone said spacers but I am scared that it will put too much stress on the wheels.

    There are so many experienced experts in this forum and hoping for some advice.
    This is way too complex.

    Yeah.
    If you already own the tires, I'd just get some quality spacers and call it done, although I am a bit surprised that those rub. Probably a 1/2" would be enough.

    What this guy said ^^^^^^

    I'd keep it simple vs spending $1000 bucks + on new wheels.

    Throw some spacers on to clear the UCA

    Spidertrax spacers and call it a day.
    Or… You’re about to open an expensive can of worms. Time to do your homework, there is no shortage of content on here already.

    Higher offset wheel will move the tire outwards and solve the control arm rubbing issue. My place I take my truck to said the lower offset number on the TRD on my truck would clear a 285 width tire, I think the offset is around 13mm vs the 25-30 mm on stock TRD offroad and sport rims.

    The other solution is to go to a narrower 255 width rim on the existing wheels at the same/similar tire diameter.

    That +30 offset got ya. I had the same issue with my Limited 275/70R18 tires. A 1/2" spacer in the front only will do you perfect but to install that safely, you will need to replace your lug studs with longer ones. A 1.25" spacer will help but may put you too far out and make you trim some plastic and possibly your cab mount. If it was me, I would do the 1/2" spacer and press some new studs in the hub. Total cost will be about $100 for quality hubcentric spacers and about $50 in studs. If you don't want to do that, look into this and then take the truck to an off-road alignment shop to have a GOOD alignment done. That should push the LCA forward enough to get it off the rear of the wheel well and no trimming should be needed.

    Thanks to everyone - I was able to install the new tires. I had to make a few modifications and wanted to share my experience.

    Equipment List:

    1) 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport - Double Cab
    2) ARB Old Man Emu 2 Inch Lift Kit (Heavy Load) - OMETAC16HKSB
    3) 2019 TACOMA TRD SPORT OEM ORIGINAL ALLOY WHEEL - 17 X 7.5 / OFFSET 30
    4) Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - LT275/70R17
    5) Spidertrax 1.25" thick, 6 on 5.5" bolt-on design
    6) REK GEN Mud Flaps (Stock size and not XL)

    I need to use the Spidertrax spacer to move the tires out to clear the upper control arm.
    The original mudguard touched the tires, so I had to replace it with REK GEN Mud Flaps.
    I also had to remove a small piece of plastic extruding behind the front tire wheel well.

    It is a tight fit but worked, and I like the aggressive look.

    Now I just need to black out my tire rims and I will be good.

    Did you get an alignment? Believe it or not a proper alignment can help push that tire out a bit and provide the clearance needed.

    A lift on an IFS vehicle doesn't mean = larger tire.

    I did get an alignment but from a normal tire shop.
    Do you think I should bring it to a specialty shop and have them review it?

    Want to make sure I don't screw up the truck.

    Wow - this was really informative. I wish I had seen this video before getting the new tires.
    At least now I know about caster settings - guess I should bring the truck to a specialty shop to get it realigned.

    As others have said it really wasn’t the tires that were the issue. Your wheel width and offset were really causing the issue. Maxing our your LCA at alignment still would’ve caused the rubbing. Spacers the answer unless new wheels were an option
