There is a puck that took place of the built in radiator cooler. They internally leak into the transmission fluid. It’s super minute amounts of coolant. But some get the coolant into the atf

I did a complete flush, fill, fluid level check at 40K miles. Easy to do and worth piece of mind. Got lots of SH$$% from those who think the Toyota WS fluid is "life time." Some just have to live and learn, and pay the price. Doing the flush is a good idea.

I'm not following the logic here. How does gas have anything to do with the transmission or the torque converter?

I’m kinda with you. That’s a pretty big stretch to say one can contaminate the other.

I had converter shudder on an older 5.0 explorer with the 4R70W. Started right around the same as yours (50K or so). I add the below additive to see what would happen and it instantly went away.

After that I assumed the problem was the fluid and not the trans itself. I changed the fluid then and every 50K after that. I got rid of the car with 200K miles on it and the trans was still perfect.

OP’s problem makes me question the “toyota reliability” of 3rd gens

Maybe those used 2nd gens i saw for sale would have lasted longer than my 3rd gen.

You aren’t wrong. The TCM does indeed change parameters based on fluid/ambient temperature. Even my 19 year old Dodge would lock out overdrive at a certain outside ambient temperature it pulled from the MAF sensor. Vehicles now probably do all kinds of extra shit I don’t know about. #StickOrGTFO

agreed with above. Go to an ATRA certified shop who warranties their work and they actually know how auto trans work, unlike the dealer you’re at.

The third gen is very reliable, but:

Too many people are stuck on stupid, don't know how to operate anything. That's why we have smart phones and smart cars.

TOYOTA was designed for smart sensible people :D

    Absolutely correct.
If you knew a girl that had herpes, does it mean all girls have herpes and dating men is the logical way to avoid infection?

Should be on the passenger side of the transmission. It’s hard mounted to the transmission. I’ll see if I can get a picture of one at work today.

you sure thats not the trans thermostat housing? after a little searching i saw that the exchanger was closer to the radiator where the lines go to the cooler

Thermostat housing will be next to the puck if you have the towing package. Then those lines will run to the external trans cooler. There should be 2 heater hoses running to the aluminum round thing
