Is a loud squeal from the rear end under full throttle on the road a sign of a bad joint? The intensity and rhythm of the squeak/squeal is directly proportional to the rpm level.

NO. I wish though, this is an issue with something in the driveline, not an issue with too much torque. :D

Sounds like your carrier bearing is shot. That's what mine sounded like when mine went out.

Don't think so. Perhaps the input bearing on the differential--or something inside.

How hard/expensive is it to replace?

Yes a squealing or chirping sound on a pull, not necessarily full throttle.

But not directly proportional to RPM, it would be directly proportional to road speed,; because this is past the transmission. You could change RPM by changing gears. The sound wouldn't matter as to what RPM it was, as the rear axle is spinning at road speed.

And your rear drive shaft is spinning at road speed; because you do not have a rear axle that can change ratios.

But Yes, a chirping sound under power to answer your question.

It is probably only dry, if you catch it quickly, you may be able to save the joint. Lube it. If you see rusty dust at the u-joint, you found your trouble.

Note: a front CV joint will chirp, make noise, vibrate, while the steering wheel is turned sharply to one side or the other; if is bad.

its not related to road speed, i can be going 80 and its fine, its just bad on throttle past about 4500. If I pull out of a parking lot and give it the beans it will squeal. If I slam it when im going 70 down a freeway, same deal. it will squeek/squeal until the rpms drop back down

I bought an aftermarket beefy one for $100. But you either have to be 4wd or get a slip joint added to your driveshaft if you are 2wd like me. I had a driveline shop do it.

Otherwise just get a stock one. But figure out the problem first.

Try it in 4wd. The front wheels will take a load off the back. If you don't get as much noise or it dosn't do it then you have something after the transfer case. If you don't have 4wd, a good inspection of the drive shaft. most likely the carrier bearing.
