As my family grows, my Access Cab Tacoma is becoming too small. I found a Tundra yesterday I really like and the dealer is holding firm at giving me $8500 for a trade. I know on trade you get less than a private sale, but this seems low to me even for a trade. I'm going back and forth on whether to sell it privately or just do the trade and not deal with trying to sell it. The truck does need a little bit of work and I wouldn't sell it privately without disclosing everything I know so I know this would also lower my private sale price. What do you guys think?

    2010 Access Cab Tacoma
    145,000 miles
    Good condition
    4x4
    6 speed manual
    Base model
(Edit) forgot to add in V6
    New frame
All maintenance documented In a file I can provide private sale

    Known problems:
    - Squeak in clutch linkage (no issues but can hear it and as far as I can tell it's the linkage only)
    - Power steering return line leaking (need to top off every week or so)
    - Small hole in muffler (doesn't cause excess noise but noticible enough to not pass inspection)

That's abysmal. You could private sale for 20k without breaking a sweat.

    Yeah.
What engine? Other options? Plug it all in to kbb.com. A quick guess at basic options, and that trade-in offer is in the range but on the low end. Private sale is $10K to $12K (not $20K, that's nuts). I wouldn't take less than $9K on trade.

Also realize that your trade wipes out sales tax on the value of the trade against your new vehicle. So if you get 8500 for the trade, you don’t pay sales tax on 8500 of the price of the new car, depending on your state, of course.

Also consider the cost to make those repairs. The dealer is going to have to take care of those issues. (Parts and labor).

Fair trade value in my zip code is $8500 assuming you have the V6. $10,500 to a private party. If you have the 2.7 4 cyl about $1500 less.

That is in my zip code. Where you live matters. In some parts of the country it might bring more.

    Plug in the numbers here.

Kelley Blue Book | New and Used Car Price Values, Expert Car Reviews (kbb.com)

Thats true, In GA I'd have to private sell at about $9500 just to break even. Considering all of the hassle involved in doing a private sale I'd want more than $10,500 for my trouble.

    Forgot the market normalized :)

Quick search of CarGurus in my area for early 2nd gens shows they're going for 12-18k with up to 250k mi. With a new frame I'd revise my sell price down to 17.5 with the manual trans and new frame, assuming a 4.0.

    6 Speed Manual = the 4.0 V6.

In my area, I see a '03 Tacoma, V6, 4x4, Access Cab with 219k miles listed for $13,800. I also see a '07 & '09 Double Cab, V6, 4x4 both with 150k+ miles, both listed for $20k. I hope this helps answer your question. KBB might be a decent reference, but it doesn't tell you what people are willing to pay, which is how worth/value is determined. The issues you listed wouldn't deter me from buying, sounds like relatively easy fixes.

You gotta show them the comps (even better if you can find a similar truck in their own yard), acknowledge the needed repairs but remind them they can do it cheaper than you and finally, acknowledge their need to make a profit but give em the stink eye as you do. This gives you control of the negotiation and doesn't leave them any room to lowball you.

8500 is a bit low, but the used market is quickly changing.

    Oh look, another mod....

This is what KBB values your truck at. Now, these numbers are adjustable based on where you live and color. I added in my own zip code, I chose Silver for the color of your truck and I listed it as "Average", not Good or Great:

If you find a sucker who will pay $20 grand for a 12yr old vehicle with 145k miles on it, let me know. I want to sell him a bridge.

The trade process is a winner for the dealer.

If it wasn't, they'd not be in the trading business.

    Yeah.
Seems that if you priced it on the low end for quick sale, you'd easily pull in $12K (depending on your area). The challenge these days is availability. If you wait for your truck to sell, what you want to buy may be gone and you may have to wait. If you are in no hurry and have another vehicle to get you by that can work. But still, $8500 is way low.

Just my 2 cents but dealers don’t give two shits about kbb values. They use wholesale pricing on trades which is why every time you go to a dealer they offer you well below kbb or any other used car valuation estimate. Kbb holds more value in private sales.

Op you could get more than 8500 but as others said then you have to mess with the hassle. What do you think is a fair value for your truck? If the dealer isn’t willing to go higher on trade see if they’ll come down on asking price to make up the difference. Not talking 5 grand here but they might shave a grand or two off.

Markets are changing but they still have the power at this time.
