Fake TRD Off-Road

We get this truck in at work as a trade in. 2016 TRD Off-Road. Red, extended cab with TRD Pro grill and wheels and TRD decals. But something doesn't look right.

Nope, ran the vin and it's only a SR5 (still has the SR5 badges). No Bilstein shocks and no locker. I'm not looking at buying it, just posting what I saw.

 

That's the only problem you will have a lot of now with everyone buying all the wanna be Poser Pro stuff etc, but like you you have to know your shit to not get fooled.

 

The integrity test of your employer is if they try to sell it as something it isn't.

 

Stickers are cheap

 

A while back I bought some parts for my Taco from a guy who buys wrecked Tacomas, fixes them up and sells them. He told be he can do a frame swap by himself in less than a day in his garage. (Yea, right.) My son (a certified Toyota tech) and I were looking at one of his finished trucks when we noticed that the badging didn't add up. He told me that TRD package (both Sport and Off Road) trucks are much easier to sell than lower trim levels. So he adds fake stickers to almost everything. Words fail me.

 

Just checked. The trim level is listed as N/A. It does have the correct options listed for an SR5 (doesn't say anything about TRD). $27,995.
I think they should've pulled the decals when it was in the shop.

 

A neighbour at the end of my street has a fake TRD off road .
I laughed when I saw the truck for the first time . This guy did not do his homework and thought he got a fantastic deal
He is just learning now that he got burnt for a lot of money

 

Sucks but anytime you make a big purchase like that, research and more research is the best tool.

 

You guys will laugh too .I kinda feel bad for him but Oh well .

A hint ..... It doesnt have a V6 and it doesnt have 4 wheel drive

 

You can get an OR in 2wd. Now the V6 part.....

 

This whole thing goes along with the rise of the "tribute car". I wonder how many of these become "real" as time and ownership passes? There was a guy who had a company truck that I knew. TRD Off road tacoma 2wd from the factory. I had to ask if it had four wheel drive. It was very hard to tell otherwise.

 

Ouch.

 

These trucks are all overpriced so we all got ripped off. That's what you say to someone who REALLY got screwed...

 

There have been people that have gone to prison for such things... People selling baseline Camaros as SS or RS or Tempests as GTOs.

 

I remember Craig Barrett talking about faked cars once. He said something to the effect of, "Only 6 were ever built and out of them, only 200 or so still exist."

 

Believe it or not, they too have been altered and / or faked. In fact the more valuable the vehicle, the more likely it is to have been messed with. Let the buyer beware!

 

Sorry guys, the fake TRD was sold.

 

Just in case check your VIN....
Last time I checked mine (a while ago) for whatever reason said SR5. No idea why such discrepancy

 

Mines an SR5 with the TRD Offroad package. I thought maybe it was just a Canadian thing.
