I am new to serious tire shopping so first off thanks OP (and everyone else), this has been a helpful write up. Found myself with 3 screws in one of my stock tires and treads are pretty worn throughout at 34k so I figure its time to just upgrade.

    1. What do you all do for a spare? Stock size is 265/70/R16 so if I up size to 265/75/R16 I would imagine I need to get a 5th tire for spare and then will that fit under the rig in its place?

    2. Should I go Wildpeak AT3W (Also researching the newr Rubitreks) or something other ya'll have used? My truck is my daily driver I get a lot of highway, dirt roads, some offloading, rain/snow, and quick drives to the firehouse when the pager goes off.

    Thanks!

When I purchased my tires they were $525 for 4 shipped. Tires are outrageous at the moment. I have 46k so far... And they are still good (getting rough and loud). I will be trying out something in the 39lb range next time, but I wouldn't hesitate to grab another set of these again... No complaints at all. I want to see how the hankooks are or possibly even the Rubitrek. These tires were very affordable when I bought them, not so much anymore.

I still have my stock spare tire, but I will use one of these tires on my spare when it's time to replace.

Personally, with how I use my truck, having a 100% matching spare was important. I even eventually found a matching wheel so now I run that as my spare and do a 5 tire rotation rather than having a dedicated steel spare.

265/75R16 will fit in the spare location no problem. I assume your post was a typo with "365" as that'd be a huge tire and would not fit.

I'm also a huge fan of the Wildpeaks. For me they were a true "best of all worlds" kind of tire. I got rid of mine and moved to some skinny 33's but I'm kinda kicking myself for that and considering going back to Wildpeaks in either 265/75R16 or perhaps even 285/75R16 even though I really did not want to go that wide. The Wildpeaks used to be a no brainer due to the pricing but currently I'd be cross shopping Toyo Open Country to see where the best deals are.

I never really looked into the Rubitreks as they don't fit my needs as well. Seems the difference betwen the Rubitrek and Wildpeak is mainly on vs off road capability. If you want the version that leans more towards on-road performance, get the Rubitrek. If you want the version that leans more towards off-road performance, get the Wildpeak.

Thanks Clenkeit, I made the edit to the tire size yes that was a typo. I am leaning towards the Wildpeaks sounds like it will work well.

Does the chain not scratch up your rim when you put it in spare storage? I would like to do the same or if I stick with the same tires next time, 1 less I gotta buy since I also like having a full spare.

Mine has a cable, not a chain. But no, I haven't run into issues with any scratching. Yes, it'll get some dirt, debris and possibly rock chips under there, but so will the other 4 wheels. For me, it's a minor risk I'm willing to take. Having a matching spare tire gives me more confidence offroading. Having a matching spare wheel allows me to do 5 tire rotations so I'm not wasting the money spent on that spare tire.

I had the same exact size and everything. Just took them off with only 5/32 tread left after 25,000 miles.

They have the best traction of any A/T I’ve owned, no matter the surface. They are outstanding for grip. But they never balanced properly, they’re loud, and that tread-life was abysmal.

I switched back to Cooper Discoverer A/T3 4S.

I liked mine, but they were totally worn out at 30k. Luckily Discount Tire gave me over $350 towards new tires due to the warranty.

I ended up selling mine for $260. Couldn’t have gone the warranty route because they weren’t worn down to the wear bars yet.

Seems odd to hear your tread life was bad. Maybe it has something to do with tire pressure, usage, or maybe you tow? Not sure why your mileage wasn't good. I know I also had balancing problems at first and again at around 20k. These tires in the SL are pretty light.

I guess it's time to update this is thread since I'm at 50k on these tires.

As stated I did have balancing problems in the beginning.

Other than that, they have been HANDS DOWN the best AT tire I've ever used and I've had a lot of different tires. Generally I'd get 20-30k and then whatever tires I had would get loud and splashy, in short most every other AT tire I've ran has been Disappointing..

At this point these tires are basically at the end of their life. The tread is low, they're riding a bit rougher, they are getting a little splashy in the rain, they're getting loud and humming, and they almost need to be "warmed up". I didn't follow a strict tire rotation schedule (these tires let you know when it's time to rotate... They get a little louder and rougher) I rotated them about every 8k.... which is 6 times so far.

They have had great wet and dry traction (lately they are not as sure footed in the rain). They were good in the handful of snowstorms I've encountered. I was off-road a handful of times and I had no issues on any terrain... recently I've been in some deep sand on the beach and they were still fine getting me through some of the heavy stuff. I can't comment on mud because I wasn't in anything bigger than a puddle. I can't comment on ice..I can't say if I was ever in icy conditions. I've been really impressed with these tires.....I average about 20-21 mpg on these tires ..keep in mind I run 38psi up front and 36psi in the back and the majority of my driving is in pavement.

All that being said.... I'm going to be greedy and look for something that's even better and lighter weight.. I probably should buy another set of these but the price has gotten pretty high vsthe $525 I initially paid for 4 of these suckers.

I'm probably going to have to swap these out in the next 5k or before we get to winter weather (if we get winter weather). The past 3 years on these tires have been great.

Any pics of what they look like at 50k miles?

And just for reference.... My son has the exact same tires 116t 265/75/16 AT3W and they are pretty fresh... Here's a comparison

    IMG_20230819_083111151.jpg

As you can see there are 3 steps on the tread edges ... My tires have 1 step now..

My tires barely chop Lincolns hair... New tires swallow Lincolns entire head.

In the grand scheme of things, I'd say the tires did their job. Thanks for the pics! I think we can all agree Super Swampers are the best do anything tire, but I'll be different and get Falkens when I need tires.

Not to be an asshole but your review doesnt mean much since you dont offroad. It’s an AT! Sounds like you should be reviewing street tires

Your looking at it the wrong way....These are the tires I bought, so these are the tires I reviewed.

My usage was for mainly road use, however I'm off-road on occasion. A just about every weekend in the summer I wind up somewhere that's not pavement for a short time. I'm not doing anything hardcore however...... I've had them on rocks, gravel, service roads, hills, mointans, beaches, etc.. hence I chose All-Terrain..

If I were doing any regular rigorous off-road activities as an enthusiast or for work then I would have selected an E load tire(not an SL), a short bed truck, and some type of lift... This is my daily driver so I wanted a do everything tire knowing that the majority of my driving is pavement.

The review was simply to put together MY long term experience with this particular AT tire. Plenty of folks are running these tires on all different types of vehicles (not just Tacoma's) in a similar manner to how I use them, sorry it didn't help you out.

    I'm sure it helped someone.:notsure:

Seems the AT4W is coming soon. As a fellow fan of the AT3W I’m gonna wait and see how the new version is before picking my next set of tires.

I have a little over 45K on a set of AT3s with mixed usage and they’ve held up well. I rotate them every 5K when I change oil. I’m in Maine so no real rock climbing but lots of logging road miles. I have some gouging and small cuts from all the shale but they should make 50K easily. I’ve been very happy with their all around performance, awesome in the rain and snow. On a GX though

Nice review. Funny how you and others go 50k+ and others are wondering why they only got 25 to 30K? totally normal. It entirely depends on where and how you drive. I could wear a set out in one day on a race track if I really wanted to.
