Are the third gens really that bad? I test drove a 16 a while back and was pretty impressed, I really liked the way the transmission shifted... I was in town for the most part though, nowhere that it would hunt for gears like I've heard that they do. I also had a sales guy talking in my ear the whole time... it wasn't different enough for me to trade in my 07. My biggest complaint on these trucks is the seating position, the floor is too high in relation to the seat, it gets uncomfortable on long drives.

Criminals buy totaled vehicles, remove the vin plate and re-attach it on a stolen vehicle. Now they have the title for stolen vehicle they acquired for free and they sell them overseas. Plenty of money to made and it happens more than you think.

Where did the access cab go? Man if someone was sitting back there that would not be pretty...

This is post-extrication. The drivers seat is reclined and the rear door/access cab portion is removed here. The cab of this truck actually appears to have held up well, given the severity of the accident.

Just a few honorable mentions I found online. Not sure the circumstances involved in each but I'd rather get tazed in the nuts...

The windshield may not be broken, but the entire engine disintegrated. Looks worse than the U-Haul I think. The Tacoma occupants are lucky their truck didn't explode on impact.

The 3rd gens cabs hold up better than the 2nd gens, I’ve seen several second gens with the engine pushed up through the floor/firewall and into the occupant survival space. I have seen much less of that with the 3rd gens. The third gens cabs look the same more or less as the 2nd gens, but they are made out of stronger steel. The 2nd gens are solid for the time they were designed/started being built, but the 3rd gens are safer, imo.

I'm inclined to agree with that statement. After having spent the last 3 hours rifling through Google images, and copart auto auctions there seem to be far more 2nd gens with significant cab damage than with the 3rd gen.

Granted I don't know the details of each accident. But here are a few worth posting.

Last night I was out walking with my wife and a car passed driving slowly.....young man and woman in the front seat (man driving), each holding their cell phone up and texting....intently....driving.....

    Absolutely beyond the pale....

I think that's one of the reasons Toyota ditched the reg cab. They don't do well when involved in a collision, and would lower the overall crash rating for the entire 3rg line up.
