At a certain point, it's just time.

    Did the same

Also took a bit to have the 'ah HAH' moment of now settlements work, how to deal with raiders on them, which quest lines are endless/randoms and should be avoided at a certain point, etc

Yeah I can't see myself getting past lvl 75 and not being totally bored and wanting to start over. I took my Skyrim character to 250+ when I finally said enough and started over.

I do feel like skyrim offered more questing. This game seems to only have 1 quest at a time per faction which are pretty much the exact same quest as before. There arent really any other quests to do.

SPOILER (in white text so dont read if you dont want to)

Spoiler point that pissed me off, regarding your spoiler point: Meaning, SPOILER

You don't really even have a choice. I had quick saved right before talking with the little shit, and tried ALL the dialog options...they all end in the same place. You CAN'T leave the little pseudo-crotchfruit behind when you light the fusion reactor, and from then on, you have to listen to him piss and moan every gorram time you set foot in the RR HQ.

Goes back to my earlier points about this being an FPS with RPG elements rather than the open RPG we used to get with the title.

You can send him to a different settlement that you dont ever visit. I thought you could leave him behind so he gets destroyed too? I didnt explore that dialog though, or maybe by just not talking to him you leave him there. I saved him since i read hes supposed to build you the wazer wifle.

On that note has anyone found the beam blaster? I havent seen it yet.

You can't not save him. IF you try to leave him behind, Tinker won't port y'all out while the 'talk to Shaun' part is still active and undone.

    Wow

Heads up...there's a bug that if you fast travel out of a settlement within the workbench range, it can often drop your settlements' happiness rating!?!?

I've not noticed this, but from what I can tell in some other board discussions, it's real

    Anyone confirm?

Happens all the time to me but I never put it together with fast travelling and maybe that goes back to our discussion about the Data > Workshops stats being screwed up a lot

I've noticed times where I've fast travelled to a settlement before and the happiness rating is a red down arrow even though all the stats are green , and somebody will complain about a lack of beds and having to sleep in shifts even though there is more beds than settlers

Going into and out of Workshop mode changes the arrow to green but not the happiness stat number

So what are the benefits of building the settlements? I tinkered with it for a few hours at the beginning but concluded that all it was good for was junk so I quit doing it. I collect way more than enough junk to do everything I want on dungeon runs.

You can sell the food and water produced for caps

Plus depending on if you follow the Minuteman missions , you can put cannon in your secured settlements for some artillery cover when you are exploring

How useful is the mortar in real use? I mean, if I'm out in the field, and get jumped by a deathclaw, using a mortar will kill me too. I can't imagine a roving band of raiders will see a marker grenade get tossed into their camp and NOT come running after you, thus running out of the AoE range of the fire?
