Does the resistor control the fan speed?? The reason I am asking because. When I have the blower on high there is very little air that comes out. But there is a lot of the time I start the truck then turn on the blower and nothing happens. I go from low to high and nothing. I can turn on ac hear it engage but still no blower. So I quickly turn off ac before I do more harm to the system. Is the blower or resistor going out??

I also notice when fan blower is working it pulses high low. What could be cause that??

I replaced both resister and motor when it started to act up. Often a bad motor will cause a resister to go.

Typically a bad resistor will only give you no speed control (the blower will only be off or on high, no in between increments). Sounds to me like you have a motor going bad. I'd replace the motor along with the cabin air filter and make sure there's no leaves or debris clogging the intake, this debris can easily cause premature blower motor failure.

The resistor controls all speeds except High Speed which is just a function of the switch position only.

If the fan is stopping on all speeds there is probably an issue with the connector on the resistor being sloppy and loose or the connection on the motor itself.

Both are known to get loose and cause a burned connector. The same is true for the speed controller connection behind the controller in the dash center console.

Question so the other day I had problem with the whole havac system. When I turned on the system I would get very hot heat out the three vents. And the vent on the drive side would get ice cold. I thought I might be ac problem. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that there could be a bad vent to stop the heat coming out h could not know if he took the dash apart. So he told me he could take the heater core out of the loop. How did he do that?? Take the heater core off the loop?? Can I do it my self put the heater core back into the loop??

I say take it somewhere else and get a second opinion. I suppose you could disconnect the heater core inlet and outlet then connect them together to bypass the heater core but why you would want to do that I have no clue.

    Start with the basics:

Cabin air filter. Replace it (I've seen ones after 15 years and people didn't realize it was even there).

Fan Motor. Remove three screws; it drops out the bottom. Take care of that form gasket (often toast in Texas heat). Drop out the fan, inspect.

The resister is marked as 87138C (this is just a locator diagram used by the parts counter, the next page shows part numbers). If you are new to wrenching, that's
fine. One trick to screws is to put light pressure on them, screw them back until you feel a click. Now spin forward. Prevents cross-threading. I'm old enough to remember when AC was a rare option and the heater housing was all metal (1970 Toyota's). I'm older than dirt.

A common symptom of a low refrigerant charge in the Tacoma is Cold air out of the drivers side vent and the vents going towards the passenger side get warmer with the warmest being the far passenger side vent. I had these exact symptoms with my 2012 and had it checked. Low R134a Charge and two leaks on on the condenser and one on the high pressure hose.

Replaced the condenser and hose, evacuated system and recharged and has been excellent since.

If the heater was affecting the system it would effect all vents due to the way the Mix Servo works.

I would suggest you take it to a shop that does A/C work and have it properly checked. I think you have a leak and need it repaired and recharged properly.

I would not disassemble the dash unless I was sure there is an issue that required it.

    Hi All,
I am new here... So my blower only works on HIGH. I need to replace a resistor? If so, where is this located? Can I buy it separately? Can a novice, like me, do this?

    Thanks in advance!

Look under the passenger side dash and you should see the blower motor and just to the left of it is the resistor.

Here are the updated items you need.

I'm pretty sure you can get a kit that includes the resistor and the connector. If you get the improved resistor and connector it is shaped different and the wire colors are not exactly the same and the connector is square Let me look up the color for you.

Here is the matching wire colors for the original to the square connector:

    Green W/Yellow stripe - Green
    White W/Black stripe - White W/Black stripe
    Blue W/Black stripe - Blue
    White W/Blue stripe - White
