Its called "Live within your means".

Don't buy a new Lexus with 22 inch rims if you are making $7 an hour and have 8 kids.

Everyone starts low and works their way out of fast food jobs.

this is a left wing tactic to try and get more union dues paided to unions. try and make a fast food worker to become unionize 15.00 an hr to work at burger king and then we pay double for food. thank god i don't eat out often.

I don't eat that crap so I don't give a rats ass what they do. I hope they all go under. My wife has been with the UADA for 20 years and I know way to much to eat anything coming from fast-shit places.

If they can't recoup their losses then they will just cut back on the food quality more than they do already.

THIS.... yet again im not in the job for the money but because i love what i do and who i do it for..but there should be a law against any fast food worker, cashier at a store, ect. making more than people that save and protect lives... im sorry if any of you are fast food workers but my jobs is 1000000X more important than you flipping burgers... you think you get yelled at.. trying getting bled on, puked on, spit at, smacked, punched, yelled at, ect. But we cant strike or walk off the job... why.... because your mom might have a heart attack and i have to go save her life... or your sister may be involved in a car accident hanging by a thread, and have to go save her... or your son gets run over by a car, while playing in the street when a drunk driver runs him over.. were the ones that save your asses and you think you deserve more pay... GTFO yourselves.... Tell me exactly how important fast food is to justify that.... when your french fries and cheeseburger can do CPR when you have clogged arteries.. then we will talk...

Sorry..this is my rant.. hope everyone has a good day :)

but this whole thing doesnt just involve fast food places. its to get the minimum wage raised which is being led by the fast food workers. this will affect everyone everywhere

either way, working at a fast food places isnt a career. its an entry level job. if you are making it a career then you need to re evaluate your life.

Exactly. There is a reason they can charge 99cents for a cheeseburger. If they have to raise food prices to compensate for douchebag employees, no one will pay $3 for that same cheeseburger. Employees earning higher wages will have their hours cut back. New hires making the least $$ will dominate schedules, then quality and service will suck it even more. Demand will lower, then fast food will ask for bailouts like the car industries.

I'll agree that worker unions were a good thing at one time, but just wait, McD's will outsource making burgers to china and have 1 guy run the restaurant with a microwave.
Or maybe they might just get some automated robots to do the job.

Look what unions did to detroit. In the 1950's it had the highest standard of living in the world.

These are all valid points and labor unions did help improve the workplace for everyone. However, one BIG consequence we can also thank them for is the outsourcing of millions of American jobs.

Organized workers drove the price of unskilled labor to a point that was unrealistic and unsustainable. Once we got to this point, corporations found more reasonably price labor elsewhere.

I might have been high in History class, but I was sober in Economics! ;)

If the minimum wage is increased to $15, would it be possible for me to buy stock in Cadillac or would I just have to buy GM.

I think I see away to capitalize off this.:D

lol. There is a place for vigilance and I stand by all workers who fight for a better living.

Outsourcing is a big problem, I agree... however, there are plenty of skilled workers being displaced by outsourcing as well. So blaming it on organized labor is a very unsatisfactory argument in that regard. Information Technology, Technical support (help desk), Finical Accounting, Health Care record management are all very good examples.

I think the fast food places should give 1/2 the employes $15/hr. Fire the other half. Make them work twice as hard. some people dont understand that people invest and open business to make themselves money, the owners and investors deal with the risk and want a return on their investment. Its a business not a charity.

If your gonna be stupid you gotta be tough.

well let me see, In HS I wanted to make a better than average living that had unlimited potential, so as per my parents, and other family members I went to college to better myself for a career that would provide that, I took the hard work avenue and paid my dues and now make over what Id thought I would in HS.

Maybe I should have just complained about it thinking I just deserve it without improving my skills and or knowledge...

    Rose colored glasses....???? 1%....????

As you read in the text you quoted I didn't grow up with many extras. Not because my parents were slackers or too lazy to work but largely because my parents opted to have one of them at home with us while we were being raised. When my father lost his okay paying job, my mom went to work. She worked 2 full time jobs (80+ hours a week) at the same time over about a two year period while my dad worked where he could and searched for another job (while we were in school). My mom who hadn't worked until my dad became unemployed went to work day shift Monday through Friday 7a to 3p as a nurse at a local hospital and then, at the same time, worked another full time job as a charge nurse at a local nursing home from 10p to 6a. I was in my early teens at the time.

When the last financial crisis hit me I was in my 30s, I'm now in my 40s. I lost what i thought was a pretty good job that paid just under $100k a year. I had a side business that I chose to expand and didn't seek other employment. The first full year, after I started only working for myself, due to pouring extra cash into my business, I payed myself $12,000. Each of my several employees out earned me by at least twice the amount I payed myself. Shit was tight but, I managed to survive without loosing anything or even ever being charged a late payment on anything. The house was cold in the winter & hot during the summer. The home phone, TV, Internet and anything else I could do without was cut off completely. I trimmed everything else to the bare minimum. And there was no other income in the house either from the live in girlfriend or any other type of assistance.

During this difficult period my son had a serious illness. To save his life, we were forced to move to an area close the St. Jude Children's Hospital. My business was not something that could be moved so needless to say I've sold some assets at a significant loss...having someone else run it wasn't working well as we lost several key contracts. After we moved to the Memphis area (without any prospects of employment or my business) I began searching for a job. I've had three different jobs over the last few years one paying $10 an hour (I had applied and turned WalMart down for the this one), one at $60k a year (as part of the continuing financial down turn I took a 5% pay cut there). But, I continued my job hunt and ended up where I'm at now. The base (I'm hourly now) salary is $105k (excluding any benefits) and can be flexed up by 25 to 50% pretty easy with bonus, overtime & working the correct schedule...which I do.

I have nothing special going for me...other than my drive. I don't have a college degree, I'm not in a union, I'm not exceptionally intelligent (I'm sure you agree) I'm just a white, single dude, in his 40s with a healthy kid. Not having any advantages myself, I just don't understand why others can't replicate what I've done. I'm not rich but, I'm not working at a place that I think should pay me more either. And because I was able to survive & thrive during the down turn, I don't believe I have rose colored glasses. And obviously I'm not in the 1% range.

I do have to wonder what salary would be supported by the market (for lack if a minimum wage) at places like WalMart & McDonalds.

I'm a bit surprised by the vitriol over the idea of a high minimum wage. It seems to me that it has made things better when ever it has happened before. I didn't see the fall of capitalism when it went from 5.15 to 7.24. I think there is a weird disjointed set of ideals that are at play in these kinds of debates.

A growing economy is one in which money changes hands. I am not for or against this minimum wage battle although 10 per hour seems a bit high since most service jobs are done by teens/young adults transitioning to their careers. If your an adult you should have the where with all to move up in the job and then aren't making minimum wage.

Back to point though, if workers make a larger income then they are prone to spend more money, as someone mentioned above about our debt and how americans spend money even when they don't have it. Well the poor will do the same thing so perhaps prices don't have to be raised everywhere.

Its pretty sad though, especially given the recent BLACK FRIDAY shopping sprees, the videos that are popping up on the internet of people tazing each other, fighting for a fricking TV that is half price.
