I completed the valve cover gaskets renewal a few days ago, 2000 limited, 3.4 L. All appeared to go well, no more leaks. I cleaned the plenum and throttle body with carb cleaner, and the valve covers- blew dry with comp air. Started up fine, moved it outside and cleaned residual oil off exterior of engine with spray engine cleaner, rinsed with hose. When restarting, as engine warmed, idle increased to about 1750, and wouldn't kick down. I drove it around the block, no change, parked it for a day. This am it started up fine, normal idle, about 1000, but as it warmed up, back up to 1700-1800 idle speed. I did remove the electrical connector to the IAC, idle dropped to normal. CEL came on, so I plugged it back in, then cleared the light by removing the EFI fuse. High idle annoyed me when driving this afternoon, so I unplugged the IAC again, but found driving rough- poor coasting when in gear, overall rough going.
I figure I'll tackle the IAC tomorrow, removing and cleaning, and the TPS, and check the connections of related vacuum lines- all the hoses are stiff, 180K on the truck. I'll probably start with disconnecting the battery for awhile to reset. Anything else jumping out at anyone?

Vacuum leak would be my first guess

Problem solved, I think. After researching a bunch, here and elsewhere, I looked extensively for vacuum leaks, but no obvious offenders. I tried the battery disconnect, no change. I figured then that disconnecting in Intake Air Control connector affecting the idle speed must be pointing to that unit causing the problem. Stocked up on Throttle Body cleaner and carb cleaner, and removed the throttle body again today. Removed the IAC, found it somewhat grungy inside- at some point in the cleaning, the rotating "door" started moving freely- kind of looks like an electric planer blade, in a very small version. Lots of spraying cleaners, toothbrushing, scraping, finally oiling and reassembling. I have a new gasket arriving tomorrow at NAPA, but the old one seemed to fit back in just fine. I lubed all of the vacuum hose junctions with some nearby K&N air filter grease, both to insure a good seal, and for ease of future mucking about. Started it up, initially idled at about 1650 rpm, but as it warmed, or perhaps burned off cleaner, settled down to 695-705 rpm. Didn't drive it yet, beer and pizza were calling, and my town is totally "altered" with multiple street projects that all started this week. Suzuki vstrom was the tool of choice for navigating mad max ville tonight.
