I agree...70 mph when towing is way too fast. You are going to get terrible mpg even if you're not towing at those speeds. I wonder if they had the ECT enabled, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

well the mpg on the 2016 and the 2012 is about the same. on the 2012, towed a uhaul 5x8 trailer 550 miles 1-way with 3 people and I only got about 8 to 12 mph and 1/2 the load.

used torque app to track the TT temps, so I ran in 4/5th a lot to keep the temps around 160-180F and the torque converter from heating up to 210+

pics of the app when I pulled the uhaul 5x8 trailer.

Well the 2016 is obviously superior if your 2012 could only tow the thing at 8 to 12 mph

    Going for the thread jack.
Did you get your trans temp to show up on your '16? I used the paid torque app and my trans temp was actually showing the same as my coolant temp. I used a different adapter than you though. I want to get my trans temp so I can check my tranny fluid level myself.

8.4 MPG while towing one ATV and 4 cinder blocks on flat road ?

Wow , that is a massive fail. Thats what happens when you put minivan engine to do truck work.
    Ha ha
My God does that 2016 truck is good at anything ?

12 MPG is not 8 MPG. These guys got 8.4 MPG with ATV and 4 cinder blocks on flat road loop. I can only imagine what would cost me to pull my Land Cruiser.
TFL got that MPG with 89 octane too (not even 87 octane fuel) Thats double burn.

You forgot the massive shed sized three horse trailer they're towing the stuff in which accounts for a large portion of the 5,600 pounds of weight being towed.

This is true. The trailer itself weighs a bunch.

You could probably get a small trailer with the ATV and cinder blocks to under 2500 lbs. They are using the huge horse trailer because they use it on a lot of tests and they want to make it pull near it's maximum rating.

Looks like the Tacoms could not tow a salmon upstream.

I believe the problem lies with the cruise control. I've noticed the truck likes to stay in the higher RPM range in cruise but take it off and do some throttle modulation to stay at the same speed and it settles right down.

That will happen with cruise control at 70 mph and they used 87 octane fuel, not sure where you got 89 from.

    Agreed

Mine definitely seems to be in love with 5th. My 2012 liked to downshift on small hills with cruise on but at least it wouldn't hold the lower gear forever like the 2016. Have a ~120 mile trip down to the coast where I can maintain the same speed (60MPH +-2mph) with cruise off and never have it downshift out of 6th. With cruise on, it's constantly dropping to 5th and sometimes even 4th with it being anyone's guess if/when it'll get back to 6th. 5th is about 500RPM higher than 6th @60MPH and end up getting 1MPG less on the trip with cruise on whether I'm in D or S-5.

I question why mpg is even a criteria for towing. When your truck is doing a job for you, you pay what it costs. Who cares about a few bucks? When I've got a horse trailer hooked up to my 2015 and I'm headed somewhere important, the last thing on my mind is $50 for gas when I've got about $20000 of investment and a lot of my time dedicated to whatever is about to happen when we get there.
