Probably the best criteria would be braking power, and oil and tranny cooling capacity. Toyotas are pretty tough if you treat them gently. They can pull at their rating, not a big diesel by any means, but they can do the job. They need a good driver though, if you want to stay out of trouble. You can't just cruise, its drive all the time.

My bad did not realized you can get 85 in Colorado. and 87 is Midgrade. (middle button is 89 over here)
Still Not sure what cruise control has to do with MPG on flat road?

We can also get pure gasoline in Colorado, no ethanol. A little more power, a little better mpg

21 gallons x 8.4 MPG = 176.4 miles on the tank. So thats a stop every 3 hours of driving, And that's assuming that POS will be able to get 8.4 MPG on the hills too.

Yep...it might even be S4 since i believe 5 and 6 are both over drive gears.

It's not necessarily cruise control i meant, but the fact they had it set at 70 mph. I still wouldn't even use it while towing a heavy load. I doubt the entire 100 miles they drove was completely flat without any inclines. Everyone has said how much the transmission has been switching between gears even on the slightest hill, let alone towing with 5600 pounds behind them.

Well, glad my Tacoma isn't going to be used for towing. If anything, maybe 3,000lbs the most. But I agree, 70mph is fast for a midsize towing at max load. When my dad towed a fifth-wheel camper with his chevy 2500hd we never went over 65. Partially due to the trailer tires not being rated for higher speeds, but any faster you're just killing your fuel economy.

It's disappointing a bit that Toyota went with this engine for a truck, they focused too much on fuel economy for daily driving. Unfortunately that's what the majority of consumers outside of Tacoma World want.

My 3rd gen will be a daily driver and used for light trails and camping and carrying kayaks. So the engine works for me. If I ever tow anything it will be something small and not making the truck work so hard.

would be interesting to see what they would have gotten at 60mph instead of 70. No brainer MPG is going to suck running at 4000rpm.

    I tow a 8000# boat with a Duramax. I get 12.5 mpg at 60 and it drops to 10.5 @ 70. Truck only I get 22 @ 60 and 20 @ 70.

Maybe I'll do some of my own tow tests with my smaller boat which weighs about 2200#.

Ya'know, if you're going to screw up a good internet pissing match with facts and logic we're going to have to ask you to leave. You're clearly not Tacoma World material. :)

It has been confirmed that ECT was off during the test. Would have been nice to see the test with it on, cruise control off, and at a lower speed. No doubt the mpg would have been much better. Hopefully they don't make the same mistakes when they do the ike gauntlet.

Why is anyone surprised by this video? Remember the Tacoma is a "lifestyle" vehicle If you're concerned about towing MPG's you've bought the wrong truck to begin with. IMO, Taco's and Colly's are the jack of all trades, master of none of the truck world.

you have to manually input the PID to get the trans temp. you cant use the internal metric from torque app for the trans temp.

    Really, And You drive one???

Apparently Eastern air and Western air, or something else is different; for you to make that statement.

I drive a 5.7 everyday, in the mountains, but Eastern Appalachians; and get 17.4-17.9, Oh Yes the 17.9 is more flat road driving; but nothing is actually flat around here.

If you actually drive one, then I would say your driving habits are not the same as mine.

I've seen posts like this before, and the poster, only saw that written somewhere.

I wish they would test a trailer in the middle of the tow rating, like my 3500 lb Casita trailer.

I have 5.7 as well and get exact same mileage as @oldracer , I also get around 18-19 MPG when I on the highway doing 70 MPH. If Toyota included that engine in Tacoma it would probably have the same mileage as 4.0 and definitely do better than freaking 8.4 MPG while Towing an ATV with 4 cinderblocks.

As much as I love Tacomas, Toyota really wussified this truck. Almost a step backwards in many aspects.

I'm sure he is well aware of that, not to mention the lack of any kind of aerodynamics with the trailer but he is a troll doing troll things
