Hi all, I have a 2009 Tacoma in black. Over the last few years, the paint on the hood and on top of the cab as been bubbling, peeling and now it's starting to rust. A friend was over and told me that in 2009 Toyota changed the formula of their clear coat and returned to the original formula the following year due to so many complaints. Does anyone know of any recalls due to faulty paint? thanks

Unfortunately if it didn't happen within the 3 year warranty period than I doubt they will cover it. Toyota's paint really sucks!

Have you waxed the paint at a minimum of twice a year ??

Welcome to owning a Toyota truck. I can't figure out why Toyota can't get the paint right.

Waxing is nice but does not keep clear coat from peeling.

Wash and wax prevents that. So many people don't even wash the top of the cab because it's hard to get to and you can't see up there anyway. I use a four foot ladder because I know what it will look like in a few years if I don't.

So you have a 13 yo black truck with unknown care and environmental conditions. Well, unknown to us and Toyota.

And you expect a remedy from Toyota?

    Not gonna happen.

As far as your friends info, it may be right. Or not. I'm not sure we have too many insiders around here that are privy to that level of detail. But I can tell you than failing clearcoat is common on all vehicles, all marquees, that are sunbaked, not cleaned and sealed regularly.

In terms of recalls and special service campaigns, enter your VIN in Toyota's website and see if there are any open for your specific vehicle. But I'd bet tomorrow's lunchtime Diet Coke you won't find anything for paint.

You are on your own. I just had my roof painted for $1100 but my hood is in good shape because I keep it waxed. I should have done a better job on the roof. Best of luck!

Going to have to disagree with you. I've had many trucks (Ford, Dodge, GMC) over the years that were mainly hunting/hauling/utility vehicles that were never ever waxed. Had them for 10+ years. Never had a clear coat problem. It's not an issue of UV damage or something like that, it's an issue of adhesion. The Toyota clear coat just does not bond properly and no amount of wax will fix that. Hell, my old '08 4Runner was purchased new and being my DD, I washed and waxed it regularly. By year 8 every horizontal surface had clear coat peeling - roof, hood, spoiler, front/rear bumpers, tops of the door sills...

It's in the same boat with my 2008 Black San Pearl. It's a known issue and not something wax would have prevented. I'm in the process now of finding a shops in my area and getting quotes to fix. Don't let it go too long or it will start to rust.
