I am in the Canadian Navy and have been for 32 years. Married in 1980 and started a family. We had a car and many thereafter. The last 4 years I was on heavy deployment schedule, Persian Gulf 7 months, NATO 6 months (sat off Somalia) we get extra pay for being in these areas I sent most of this home. I saved enough for a good down payment and did not realize that my wife saved a fair chunk to. I will retire in 3 yrs with 35 years given to Queen and Country (freedom 55) with a decent pension so my wife suggested I get a truck (what a keeper) and pay it off in 3 yrs. I know that the price of trucks is higher here in Canada my truck was 26,000. So that is my story. I have noticed a lot of young guys with brand new trucks but what the fuck. Makes no mind to me how they got it but the majority seemed to have worked at it. Now I just have to save some more for some Mods. I see another deployment in my future

Who gave anyone shit because mom and dad bought them their truck? Just because someone points out that mom and dad are responsible for some young folks having a Tacoma, like I did, doesn't mean they are attacking anyone. Sounds like guilt to me.

I agree. I bought my first new car when I was 19 while also paying to put myself through college. You've done well and I applaud that.

I don't disagree but, again, show me where anyone is "quick to judge" or "bitching"? I'm not seeing it in this thread. Is there someone in your life giving you crap that we don't know about? Would probably be a good idea to explain it if that's the case.

Seems there's a lot of animosity in the younger crowd on this site for some reason. Some of you seem to be angry because you feel you're in some way "persecuted" by the older crowd but I'm just not seeing it here. I personally don't understand it.

Just to spell it out (not that I really feel the need to): Most of us respect a young man/woman who takes the initiative and does well for themselves. I did it and that's what America is all about. There's also nothing wrong with parents who buy their child a nice vehicle after working hard for such comforts for their family because, again, that's what America is all about. But I still don't see where the attitude comes from.

That's a good post. I would tend to agree with that.

OK, I'm done. 5 posts in a row is way too many for this "old man".

im gonna side with the young guys who work for what they have. i bought my first car right after i graduated and have been paying ever since, got rid of it and bought my tacoma brand new about a year ago. ill tell you, i dont make alot of money at my job, but for what i do make i work my ass off for and as said before i think i deserve to have something nice. yes, i do live at home but everything from my phone, truck payment, insurance, 2 dirtbike payments and whatever else is payed for by me. i dont see any reason to rush moveing out at 20 until i get my life lined up, instead of moving out asap and going money crazy burrying myself in debt.

^That's a good idea, stay home as long as you can, lol!

Sounds like you have a good work ethic. That will serve you well over the course of your life.

Mom and dad said they'd help me with my first car if I had a job by age 16. At 14 I was cutting grass every weekend through the summer. At 15 I was working at Carquest and cutting grass and had saved up enough money to buy my own '93 Prelude for $4500. My dad decided he wanted a new Tacoma, so in '04, he bought an '04 and sold me his '94 Toyota truck. $6000. When I graduated high school in '05 I decided I needed better mileage cuz I was going to college through the week, and coming home every weekend to work at a furniture store. Sold the truck back to my dad for 5 and had enough in the bank to buy a '02 Accord for $12000. Worked all through college and graduated last week. Bought my '05 Taco in '07. Sold my Accord for 9K, financed 13K, owe $272 a month and pay $300, while working part time. Now that I've graduated, I'm working full time and plan on getting a better job and making some more money and paying around $350/month. I'm 21 now. That's a big loooong story of how I came to get my Taco.

It is me again and after thinking about all that has been said here it reminds me of the father telling his son that he had to walk to school in the snow 5 miles and both ways were up hill. Every generation will see life differently. I have tried to give my kids a good life and my daughter at times will tell me Thank you Dad but I need to do this on my own.

People just enjoy what you have no matter how you got it. Life is to dam short to be saying this and that about generational ways. No matter how old you are your parents hated your music.

Once again only my 2 cents worth
