Here locally (within 30 minutes of the distillery) it's $23.99 at Kroger or Total Wine and almost always available. It is excellent for the price. Eagle Rare is my daily...if I don't go through it too quickly. About every 4-6 weeks it's in stock at Kroger but if I don't catch it when it's there, it will be gone that day. Usually only a case or two allotment at my retailer. I like Blanton's but it's almost never available. Kroger had several bottles for $48.99 six months ago and I did the fatal "I'll come back later...pressed for time...big line at register" and it was gone. Haven't seen it since.

15 years ago (when I was a poor college grad) you could get any of the VanWinkle's with only a little luck, not a miracle like now. I remember for sure seeing 2 bottles of 23 year on the top shelf at Kroger for $209.99 (each) but simply couldn't justify the price. Now they have lotteries at the local stores and there will be 5000+ entries for a total allotment of 5-10 bottles and you don't even know what you'll get the "privilege" of buying if you get drawn. How times have changed....

Pretty stoked for today's haul. A couple are Christmas gifts, mostly to me

That edition of Octomore is badass. Best of the ones I've tried.

    Nice haul, man!

I Was at Total Wine today and they were hiding this bottle behind the counter. I looked it up and it's interesting - each year they released limited bottles. They started 5 years ago with a 20 year aged release, followed the next year by a 21 year aged release, 22 year the next, etc until the 25 year old. This is the final release. Would have liked to have it, but $170 was too steep for me.

The 25 hasn't been that well received. The thing with bourbon is that it is aged in first fill charred barrels, so it takes on the wood, char, sugars really quickly. The flavor the barrel imparts can get overwhelming after a while. The 23 year is often considered the least enjoyable of the three Pappys for that reason.

On the flip side, scotch uses repurposed barrels, often ex bourbon, that has had another spirit pull a lot of the bold flavors out of the wood already. They get to spend longer letting the environment and seasonal changes work their magic without the barrel dominating the flavor profile.

I would love to try the Rhetoric 25, but I'm not lusting after owning a bottle.

Dropped the GF off at church this morning and am out running Christmas errands. Stopped by the Total Wine in Folsom to see if they had anything different (my regular is in Sacramento). I figured all stores were the same, however this one had about 1/2 the space dedicated for bourbon and scotch. So not as many choices but I did find a Compass Box that was 1) well reviewed, and 2) in my budget.

I'm currently sitting in a BBQ joint for lunch that I saw as I was driving by. Sadly, it's not good. Pulled pork and brisket are dry, no flavor and zero smoke (should have known when I walked in and saw the electric smoker). Beans and mack and cheese - bland. Oh well - got a good bottle of scotch tucked away in the Taco secret hidey hole to look forward to.

Pretty much nothing worse/more disappointing than bad barbecue. Food wise anyways. Maybe bad Italian?
