Traded a bourbon buddy bottles I don't particularly love for these today. Also got a sample of Sam Houston 15. The JMCB surprised me in a good way. The Sam Houston is good, but can't say I'm totally in love with it

Speaking of Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend, I have one that is open and short a single pour that I would be happy to give up at a prorated SRP. I think there are just certain finishes that I personally don’t go for. PM me if interested.

    Not much stock left.
I’m not sure the flavors I’m tasting in this one, but does taste a bit sweet at first. Seems to get better as the ice melts.

Copy that. They have it at Totalwine for $64, is that a good price?

I picked up the Small Batch. The neck pour was a little astringent for me. Tonight’s pour was better, but I still had ethanol/rubbing alcohol on the nose. It’s sweet on the palate similar to the few wheated bourbons I’ve had. For the price it’s good.

So I picked up a bottle of Russell’s Reserve single barrel after a couple people suggested.
I found it quite hot. Don’t know how else to describe it. Not a fan after a pour of it.
I’ll save it for guests. I’ll pick up another Buffalo Trace next time I go to town.

I do enjoy this thread and learn more about bourbon every day.

We recommended Russell’s Reserve 10 year which is 90 proof like Buffalo Trace. You got Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel which is 110 proof…

Sorry man. Just toss a couple ice cubes in there next time and proof it down. The Single Barrel is an excellent bottle.

I didn’t care for the bottle when I first picked it up, but found over time, it opened up really well. Give it a try after being opened for a bit, and as Hook mentions, try an ice cube to round it off.

You can try dropping some water in there or a couple small pieces of crushed ice. I completely understand what you may be experiencing with the Russell's stuff. I am not huge into turkey products so I stay clear most the time. Everyone has different palates and likes different things which is ok.

Stick with it! The more you try different whiskeys at various proofs you try you’ll get better accustomed to the higher proof offerings. With a little more time you will be able to come back to the Russell’s and enjoy it more neat. Until then try the small ice cube in your glass to proof it down a bit.:proposetoast:
    Story time…
I can recall decades ago when I first tried Hot Wings. I’d order “mild” because “hot” was like eating fire. My friends teased me relentlessly for it, but after a year or so, I was ordering the “3-mile nuclear” option with everyone else. A year and some into my journey to get serious about good whiskey, I certainly enjoyed the first sips from the 1792 FP at 125 proof a few days ago!

I love the RR10, but like you found the SB hot. I let it sit for a bit, now I add a splash of water when I have a pour. Found for me it helps. Cheers!

Thanks! I just got done with a pour. Added a cap of the bootle of spring water and it tamed it nicely. Tasty and a great way to end a Sunday in the country.

Neat last night it was so so, not terrible but bland on most counts, very little depth. In an OF tonight, much more enjoyable went back for seconds.
